Atlanta is still at 14 as of 3/16 after being murder free for three weeks, which by this time is one less than 2012. This year started with a huge jump over last year. Maybe the cold lingering winter slowed things down.

Could've been an honest mistake ....but they falsely reported same thing in 2008 and again last year in 2012. So the Chicago media has been wrongly attaching a label to their hometown, yet they haven't come under fire from the city's residents. Why is that?
Because the news media just says "rate" without thinking. Chicago in 2003 and in 2012 had the highest number of gross murders within its city limits, but was roughly in the middle tier when it came to murder rates. Detroit, Atlanta, St Louis, Memphis, etc. were all large cities with higher RATES, but lower number of actual murders.

Basically the news was just being sloppy and not using their words correctly.

I heard that a lot as recently as January, when the news said Chicago had "its highest monthly murder count in decades". In actuality it was the highest murder count in....a few months. They really jump the gun sometimes and make a big headline without actually checking any facts. Of course they said nothing at all in February when Chicago actually did have its lowest monthly murder count (14) since the 1950's.

So far March is actually lower than the record set in February. We're sitting at 12 murders this March compared to a total of 52 last March.

Philadelphia is perhaps a good city to compare with Chicago.

Already posted this before, but I'm still a bit astounded. The Bronx has had only 8 murders as of 3/17 a 61% drop from last year. Obviously somewhat of a fluke, but still. A year to date murder rate of 0.57 per 100k.

6 out of the 8 murders were in the South Bronx, giving a year to date murder rate of 1.03 per 100k, a fraction of the usual.

No, Chicago's a fluke. Philadelphia is A LOT safer than Chicago and if trends continue Philly will end with a lower rate than DC or San Francisco.

So what, the Bronx is still dangerous and blighted.

Every time that particular individual posts, the signal to noise ratio of the thread goes down 10%.

Ever been to Riverdale/Fieldston? Probably one of the nicest areas in NYC.
