Very pleased to see Pittsburgh doing so well. It's actually quite shocking that a new trend has emerged here. Last year there were more homicides in the suburbs of Pittsurgh than in the city proper, and I fully expect that to continue this year. Assuming that figure you posted is just for the city proper and not all of Allegheny County I think we're at 9 now for the city as a man just killed his sister the other day in the city's West End neighborhood of Sheraden.

2012 Homicides Drop In Pittsburgh, Rise In Suburbs « CBS Pittsburgh

There were 42 homicides in the city in 2012. If current trends hold true with 9 murders for the first three months of the year we'll end up slightly below that in 2013 with 36 murders. I have a feeling we'll see a slight uptick in the middle of summer, though, as we usually do, so we may tie the number from last year.

DC at 15, on pace to break last year's 50 year low of 88. Increasingly, we have hipsters killing us with ironic viewpoints, and making neighborhoods unsafe for anyone who doesn't separate their compost items from recyclables.

Nashville now at 7.

Interestingly, it's happened in little spurts.

1 on 1/5
3 on 1/6 (all in different locations)
2 on 3/13 (different locations)
1 on 3/16

64 days between January and March with no murders...which is quite unusual.

Typically we average 60-80 murders per year. I don't want to go with the "on pace" because more tend to happen in warmer weather...but we're definitely ahead of the curve.

It's still shocking to see whites living across the Anacostia River.

The change in cities all over the US is pretty impressive. From Philadelphia to DC, to NYC to Chitown

Current count in New Orleans is 34. Still atrocious, but much better start than last year, when we had 27 in the first 28 days.

I don't have my spread sheets for Dallas on me at the moment, but here's an article.

Quote:
Authorities on Friday were investigating two slayings by masked gunmen that occurred within hours of each other in Dallas.

Investigators don’t believe the slayings are connected but do think they may be related to the drug trade.

Police say the first slaying occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday when two men wearing masks confronted 54-year-old Anthony Dewayne Scott in the driveway of his duplex near Moore Park, in east Oak Cliff.

The robbers demanded cash before one of them shot Scott several times. They fled in a brown pickup.
Scott lived in the 1800 block of East 11th Street, and his home already had a for-rent sign above the door late Friday morning. Neighbors said they knew he had been killed but had no idea how, when or why.

“I just heard from people passing by,” said Earl Logsdon, who works at an auto repair shop nearby. “It’s kind of scary though.”

A few hours later in southeast Dallas, 29-year-old Corneillas Simon was shot at an apartment complex by someone wearing a gorilla mask, police said.

Authorities say the gunman chased Simon into an apartment in the 200 block of South Jim Miller Road before fleeing around 1:30 a.m. Friday. Simon died at the scene.

Both victims had drug records in Dallas County.

Simon had a conviction for felony drug possession and had been arrested last month on another possession charge.

Scott had 2011 convictions for delivery of cocaine and marijuana and cocaine possession. He also had several theft convictions.

There have been 31 killings this year in Dallas, compared with 19 at this point last year.
Staff writer Tanya Eiserer contributed to this report.

The thing about New Orleans, is that every time things seem to be cooling down over a period, it's always followed by periods of mayhem.

Yep. One yesterday, another today. Almost one a day for the last week or two.
