Boston vs New York vs Philadelphia vs Washington DC vs Chicago - Which of these cities has better race relations?

DC is the outlier because unlike NYC/Chicago/Boston/Philly it does not have historically ethnic enclaves. DC is a historic Black city. So it did not have a segregation history by racial groups like the others. Even to this day DC is mostly a black/white city in the city itself, unlike the others. DC is also a more laid back city than the others, so there’s not as much bad relations between groups.

NYC/Chicago/Boston/Philly all have/had ethnic enclaves so there is some built in impacts on race relations. Although in the northeast, blacks and Latinos have pretty good race relations. In Chicago, prior to the George Floyd riots, in Chicago, blacks and Latinos had pretty indifferent relationships, although during the rioting, Latinos (Latin Kings) defended their neighborhoods and there was beating of blacks, and this created some beef between blacks and Latino gangs, I heard. So I would say, Chicago may have the worst race relations of these cities.

Yeah, DC is a bit of an outlier. It's not a big northern industrial city like the others. It's more of a hybrid city with newer, faster growing suburbs.

I don't really think enclaves has that much to do with comparing these by race relations, maybe in the case of New York City which is so large with so many different subsets of ethnic enclaves that are so large. But I see it a bit different for the others. Philly and DC for example aren't that far of in city proper diversity, and even just in the city itself are similar percentage of Blacks and Hispanics, as well as Whites and Asians, whether there's separate enclaves in parts of one city, or different ethnicities spread about each respective city, but not part of a huge enclave. The two cities have almost an identical foreign born population.

DC having a comparatively larger Black middle class, comparatively larger amount of well to do Blacks and comparatively larger Black political class is why it does "better" in this category. As stated by others, gentrification has led to significant tensions so its far from perfect and there are Black - Latino issues as well though not to the level of some of the others.
