I took a snapshot of actual recorded January temperatures for comparison. This was from last year. Both cities and typical winters more or less.
Which do you prefer for your January?
Both are essentially different climates. Miami is classified as a tropical climate whereas Santa Monica as a Mediterranean one, for me Santa Monica is better classified as a dry, subtropical oceanic climate.

Santa Monica:
Miami Beach:
Miami Beach is a Humid subtropical climate, and Santa Monica is a Mediterranean climate (dry subtropical).
Oceanic climates are much cooler than Santa Monica. San Francisco is a better example of an oceanic climate.
more like seattle...
calling Santa Monica oceanic is a joke...
Santa Monica has never seen a freezing temp (33 F record low), Miami has seen freezing (32 F). Santa Monica has seen 90s in winter, while most of Miami, let alone Miami beach, doesn't average in their hottest month. the vegetation you can grow in Miami beach you could grow in Santa Monica, there are a few exceptions. Santa Monica is a USDA Zone 11a, while Miami beach is 10b.
taking this into account, I even think you don't beleive Santa Monica is "oceanic".
What is the point of a weather poll comparing one month of the year? The OP knows LA/Santa Monica would trounce Miami if all 12 months were considered.
^^^ Maybe to try and booster Miami? I'm sure he assumes that everyone loves the same weather as him, and therefore "might" have "possibly" rigged a poll to put MIA on top. Honestly, when I opened the poll, I thought Miami would be winning.
Believe it or not, I'm sure most would prefer the cool high 60's of Santa Monica, over Miami Beaches high 70's low 80's temps. As much as I hate cold weather, 83 degrees is too dang hot for February. I don't want to sweat in February. I've experienced a December in Miami that had temps in the mid to high 80's, and it felt VERY uncomfortable. But if anything EVER happens in Santa Monica similar to what just happened in Huntington Beach, then give me Miami Beaches 80 degree winter days by 100 over coastal SoCal. Snow on the beach looks absolutely disgusting. Yuck!!

Time will tell I guess...
its definitely an attempt to make Miami look better. notice his January only includes the last 3 days of January, and the full month of February... he decided to not show Santa Monica Pier's data showing about 10 days of 80 F weather, including an 88 F high there that is higher than his :tropical miami beach...
evidence is clear
1) he compares a single month (and wrong one too)
2) compares a city (Miami beach) station, to a pier (Santa Monica) station
3) this topic has been overdone, its the same answer every time... Miami has better winter weather, but not by much...
