Your right. The huge population and size of the city is a good part of it. Also, geography and history also count to some extent.

But one of the main reasons is that this is the GENERAL forums. And New York City is one of the top tourist cities in the country plus NYC is also shown in moves and on television quite often. So many people here on the generals forums often feel they can talk about NYC like they really know it (even if they actually know just stereotypes).

One of the frustrating things as a native New Yorker I see here on City-Data is that some people pretend to be some kind of expert on all things New York, while I suspect they never even stepped foot in New York. Other large cities get that too sometimes (notably LA and Chicago), its noticeable when you see one making negative comments about a city in only a very general stereotypical way.
