More areas in regards to predominately Black census tracts and median household income above the state figure.

Nashville(TN's median household income is $44,298(09-13 info) and the metro's median HH income is $52,779(08-12 info) ): Census Tract 010105 in Davidson County, Tennessee

Census Tract 015630 in Davidson County, Tennessee

Census Tract 012702 in Davidson County, Tennessee

Quite a few others just miss the criteria as well and I noticed quite a few in the 25-40% Black range that fit the median HH income criteria.

Jackson MS (state median HH income is $39,031(09-13 info) and metro is $45,976(08-12 info): Census Tract 010202 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 011101 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 011102 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 011103 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 010809 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 010808 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 010500 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 030800 in Madison County, Mississippi

Census Tract 010101 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Census Tract 030108 in Madison County, Mississippi

Census Tract 010102 in Hinds County, Mississippi

Again, some others were close either way. I'll add more areas later.

Off-topic but an interesting piece about how Black Philadelphia teenagers were shut out of American Bandstand. "Rock" was appropriated from African Americans in the city (and the country) and transformed into a medium more palatable for middle class Whites.

Quote:
The regulars were almost all working-class Italian American high school kids. Their close proximity to Philadelphia's black community, Jackson shows, was one of the keys to the success of "American Bandstand." Italian American kids "seemed to have a natural sense of rhythm and an inborn musical ability," according to Ed Ward in "The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock 'n' Roll." Especially in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, they were the "one ethnic group that knew anything about rock and roll." At a time when suburbanization was moving the white middle class out of the city, working-class Italians were left behind in close proximity to black neighborhoods. When the kids on "American Bandstand" brought new dances into the studio, they were dances they had learned from Philadelphia's blacks. The swim, the Watusi, the pony, the stroll and the greatest dance craze of all time, the twist, all were taught on "American Bandstand," and all originated in Philadelphia's black communities. Bandstand," Jackson argues, made those black dances acceptable to white society.

Interesting. Elvis essentially did the same thing.

I always knew Chubby Checker grew up in Philly but didn't know he was born in your home state. This isn't quite our idea of "rock and roll" today.

The stroll was also introduced on American Bandstand. There's no question that this dance was a product of the African American community. It reminds me of Chi-Town stepping.

I didn't know either; apparently he was born in Andrews, which isn't far from Georgetown.

There is actually a poster on C-D who has parents that know Chubby Checker and I think her parents grew up with Chris Rock's parents, who are also from Andrews.

Anyway, thanks Bajan for confirming what I thought in regards to Rock N Roll and how the game got flipped.

Yep.

Quote:
The influence of pop music on what becomes rock and roll is typically viewed as that of "cleaning up" R&B on several fronts. One is structure, as pop and country have a more systematized verse-chorus relationship that Palmer (1992) discusses in terms of British folk music's song stanzas and the narrative ballad. Others are R&B's sexually overt lyrics, loose and rather rough ("spontaneous") lead harmony and vocals, and the beat, thought to be too rough and powerful to be palatable to the new teenage rock and roll audiences without dilution.

So basically, these artists were to rock n' roll what Flo Rida is to the rap game.
