Trees down and flooding seem biggest issues. Poor lady and her child killed in Wilmington when tree smashed into their house.

Also note they have caught looters in Wilmington.

Brunswick County has imposed a curfew. Smart.

Hurricane Florence Message 10

Special Announcement-

Below are significant impacts that the Town is experiencing. We are sure it is not a complete list, merely highlights.

Severe widespread damage has been reported throughout the community. Many roads have been blocked with downed trees. If you see a tree that is blocking the road, report it to the Fire Department at sjfd@atmc.net. Be advised that at this time, the Fire Department staff will not respond to downed trees, as conditions are too dangerous.

Many roads are flooded.

Access to the Main and Regency Gates is cut off due to downed trees.

Power continues to be out in areas of the development. If your power is out, report it to your electric provider.

Brunswick County has placed a curfew on unincorporated areas commencing sunset Friday through sunrise Saturday Morning. Please keep this in mind if you feel you must leave the community.

Please, use common sense. This is not the time to be on the roads. If you have something to report, Emergency Management encourages you to email them at sjem@atmc.net.

An additional blast will be sent to all residents when it is safe to return.

We stayed in our Woodlands home never losing electricity or any utilities. The winds were fierce from Thursday midnight to Friday noon, gusting up to 105 MPH. Luckily neither our nor our neighbors houses sustained any damage. We drove around St James Friday afternoon and observed the fallen and broken trees. Some creeks were overflowing and the Polly Gully bridge was definitely impassable. All in all there was much debris on all the roads and some damage to houses but not anything near a catastrophe.

The trees are so hard to replace when you lose them. Hope most of them survived.

Hurricane Florence Message 11

St. James continues to experience wind and rain impacts from Hurricane Florence that impede commencing recovery actions.

Power continues to be out in areas of the development. BEMC and Duke will begin recovery efforts as soon as conditions are safe. At this time, restoration of service is unknown. If your power is out, report it to your electric provider.

Recovery efforts to clear the roads in St. James will commence when conditions allow and not before it is safe for the crews who will perform the services.

Continued rain, storm surge and flooded roads in the surrounding area, impede return to St. James. Brunswick County Emergency Services and TOSJ Emergency Management is STRONGLY advising that residents do not attempt to return at this point. Hwy 211 is closed, 87 is closed. If you attempt to return, you could be impeding rescue efforts.

The Town of St. James declared a mandatory evacuation. Those residents who elected to remain, must be patient with the conditions in the community, and surrounding areas.

Serious impacts from Hurricane Florence continue to affect St. James. Heavy rain, flooding and road wash outs are being reported. Brunswick County Emergency Services and TOSJ Emergency Management is imploring residents to stay off the roads within the community. Not only are you endangering your lives, you could impede emergency vehicle recovery operations.

POA Hurricane Update for 6PM, September 15

Many of the roads in St James Plantation are experiencing severe flooding. There are projections for a significant amount of additional rainfall through the night. This flooding can cause road failure and sinkholes that cannot be observed until you drive into them. Please heed the messages from Emergency Management and Brunswick County and do not drive on the roads, especially any areas where the roads are submerged. The directive by the town to not return has not been changed.

We strongly urge any St James residents who are at home to remain there on Sunday and not venture out for another day. Then we can begin the process of repairing and cleaning our community.

I tried to return to SJP today. All roads into Southport are flooded and impassible (Saturday). River Road, 87 through Boiling Springs, 906/Middleton, and 211 are all a no go. My guess it will be at least Monday before I try again.
