While a good question how much you owe in loans needs to be put into perspective with how much income you make.
If you have 15k in loans and make 30k that isn't great compared to someone who has 50k in loans but makes 200k.
Between my wife and I we have 70k left and that started about about 90k. We got no help from either of our parents and she has a masters. Our income is in the top 7-10% and we are very happy with our college choices. We probably could have worked a bit more in college but it is what it is.
We would have paid it down to about 20k already but the blended interest rate for all of it is about 2% so it will be the last thing we pay off.
I dated a guy who told me that he'd never marry anybody with student loan debt. I thought that was pretty interesting coming from somebody whose parents paid for his schooling.

please, please, please don't take this the wrong way, but some parents can plan out their children's futures very well. it shows responsibility.
put yourself in the position where your child needs to go to college. do you really want them to finish with a huge debt hanging over their head? i know i wouldn't so i'll be sure to set aside a couple hundred thousand for a kiddie college fund. i'll also be damn sure they get good grades too, otherwise i can buy myself a porsche and they can pay for not studying themselves
Bachelors out of state and Post-baccalaureate certificate in state...I owe $53k total but they are in in-school deferment. I graduate in May though, yikes...

You missed the point I think which was that someone who got all of their college paid for might not have any idea what it's like for someone who had to pay for it all on their own.

That's very unfortunate. I have a great salary but so much debt that I will likely need more than half of the repayment period to rid myself of it. I do think I'm managing the monstrous payments well though. If my girlfriend broke up with me because of my parents' irresponsiblilty she probably wouldn't be worth my time anyway. I could see the frustration if that person did not manage it well, but if they do then there's no reason to discount them for their loans.

If that is what she meant, then I feel sorry for her because she is being judgmental. Notice she never said he criticized her for it, he was just making a decision he thought was an intelligent one. She is the one that elevated herself over him.
