It doesn't seem to be as touchy of a subject in Colorado, as it is in Nevada...people get downright belligerent if you don't get the pronunciation right in NevAda........make that an "uh" and all hell breaks loose......

You may be playing into Jazz's hand with that one as the Duke was a Californian from the age of 4. However, I can't imagine my grizzled rancher great grandfather from La Plata (luh-plaata) County pronouncing anything the Spanish way.

Wow. Okay, people move places. That's always going to happen. And pretty much all of my friends that were born in Colorado pronounce with the short "a" when they say the state's name. So it's not just us "damn non-natives" that everybody just LOVES to complain about.

Although technically I can consider myself a native if I darn well please since I arrived before any form of personal independence from family started taking place.

Since you're in Oklahoma, how do you like the way Miami is pronounced there?

LOL-ing at all the different ways of spelling phonetically, too....

Anyone with any kind of accent will only add to the confusion......

I'll just accept that there's no consensus on how Colorado is pronounced. The state is a lot like Missouri in that different people pronounce it different ways. No way is more correct than the other. I didn't mean for a thread of pronunciation to become hostile.

Plenty of sophisticated folks routinely butcher the original Spanish pronunciations of state and city names...

e.g., "Los Angeles"

No need to be consistent here, folks!

Having said that...spending all my growing up years here in Texas, I always heard it as "colo-RAH-do" - in fact, my very young ears kind of missed something, and I remember thinking it was something along the lines of "kahda-rahda"

If you are a native or have lived in the state for awhile that is how it is pronounced-don't pronounce it Colorodo..then we know you are an idiot and trying to sound smart.
