I agree that there is huge demand for a Costco to come to Columbus and I would LOVE to have one here, but that style of... negotiating... is just totally foreign to the Columbus real estate companies. I really hope it works out, but does anyone know if Costco is standing firm on that contingency? Are they willing to budge on it at all? There probably isn't even a single example in Columbus' history of a large, prime piece of retail-zoned land selling for nothing (or next to it)...

Update on the 2nd Walmart Neighborhood Market

The 42,000-square-foot grocery store will be situated on about 6.5 acres of a 35-acre parcel of land owned by Columbus developer Ben Billings and his family. It will include a gas station fronting Blackmon Road.

Around 14 acres of land at 7260 and 7300 Blackmon Road rezoned from “residential estate” to “general commercial.

The store site is adjacent to Georgia Military College and across Blackmon Road from Greystone Farms subdivision. Sonoma Pointe subdivision, Greystone Summit apartment complex and Blackmon Road Middle School all are in vicinity.

It’s an area that overall is heavily residential and is now experiencing a burgeoning commercial presence on Schomburg Road and at Lakeside Village just east on J.R. Allen Parkway. It’s also only two miles from a Walmart Supercenter on Gateway Road, a store that opened in early 2008.

The Neighborhood Market will have a drive-thru pharmacy, and that stores of its size typically employ about 85 people full-time and part-time.

Walmart has proposed two entrances to the Neighborhood Market, with acceleration and deceleration lanes, and a traffic signal if needed. There will be some commercial development around the grocery store, which should take a little less than a year to complete once construction starts.

Step 2 buy a large area of land
