ESPN is the No. 1 sports network in the world. It reaches 212 million Americans. In 2019, ESPN presented 24,749 live events and 83,340 total live hours of studio and event programming. I think that is pretty significant and their purpose is to provide sports entertainment throughout the world and they’re pretty successful at it. Jay

And in 2020, there is nothing of substance to cover.

I expect that to bleed into 2021.

A 60 game MLB season will not bring back the audience a true season does.

I also firmly believe audience free arenas and stadiums will not generate as much viewer interest.

In short, this is a disaster for any enterprise reliant on sports.

Hopefully ESPN contract rights have exit clauses for the pandemic etc....that alone could bleed them dry. They already were under pressure from Fox etc....

I again disagree. All major sports are coming back or have come back. Sports lovers are going to watch no matter how long a season is. If anything viewership on ESPN will go up because there is no audience. Those people love sports and will now watch them on TV rather than in person. Jay

Most of Baseballs TV audience is the local markets where fans in the are follow their teams...NESN, YES, etc. National games on ESPN aren't the big draw. Football and Basketball hurt ESPN more by not being on. Basketball is still slated to start in July.

My husband the football fanatic and sports lover would agree. My husband is watching so many old games too. It doesn't matter to him.....it seems as long as there's a ball on the field/stadium he watches it. Or even the history of sports and biographies of the players too.

They're still hurting though. NBC too, big time. They'll be having big layoffs soon. 20% reduction in NYC office footprint. Tighter restrictions on T&E. Stamford campus should be in the clear though.

That's right Bob. As a passionate and diehard basebell fan, this upcoming shortened season won't feel the same or have the same edge, though I'll still watch.

With fans not being able to go to games, the TV ratings should actually be higher than normal. Remember, if the Red Sox get 37,000 fans at a game, that's 37,000 people that are Red Sox fans but are not watching it on TV.

The question with sports is will they be able to finish their seasons? If too many players test positive and/or get really sick, if overall cases spike, the leagues might be pressured into closing shop again.

Not sure now. Several MLB players have said NO to 2020. Mets have an unidentified roster level covid player plus several in minors with team right now.

1 outbreak in any MLB season and 220 goe bye-bye. There is no wiggle room for further delays.
