Seymour does not have a summer school program like just about every town does. This makes for a high drop out rate…not because so many students drop out but because those kids who do eventually go for a GED or get by just enough, do it elsewhere. I doubt the OP will have to worry about this.
There were cars at CLS every day this summer. Kids were (some kids) in summer school. Not many, but some. Also the school library was open 1 day every other week to promote summer reading. The elementary kids loved swarming in to get new books checked out.
I can't verify about the HS age kids, but
If your going to announce a high drop out rate from Seymour HS prove your facts! That's NEVER been an issue as long as I've been living here, and I bother to read the BOE minutes were I'm sure that kind of concern would be addressed at every meeting.
And ok yes - there were a few more drop outs in 2009 and 2010. I don't think that qualifies as a notable pattern yet. Noted fact Oxford HS students stopped going to Seymour high in 2008, greatly reducing total student population# here. With a smaller total , then each single kid leaving looks like a higher percentage, if all your looking at is the numbers. I believe the Oxford pullout affected those numbers too. I'm sure it shook the kids moral some. Yes yes- there were a few news reports about the 2009 and 2010 numbers. Since then I'm not seeing it be a huge concern still vs any other town.
Here in town there is a new Superintendent , and a different First Selectman at town hall. Everyone is putting modernization and schools first.
Sorry -morale, auto correct struck again. I'm sure some kids where discouraged by not having their best friends with them in class anymore. High School is hard enough, when their support system of peers & BFFs were gone I would guess it felt just that extra bit harder.

Calm down. I'm not dissing Seymour. I went there and have family teaching in that system. My only backup (this late in the evening with no desire to search the web) is they tell me there isn't a summer school program. You're talking about summer reading/math intervention.
I wouldn't have a problem putting my kids in the Seymour school system at all. Just saying that some kids drop out and it made the school look far worse than it was. Unfortunately, some people use that as an excuse to dis the school. I'm not one of them.
