If you remember, while we had our historic cold, the West Coast had an all-time warm winter. Well guess what? L.A. has a possibility of the unusual distinction of May ending up colder than January or February! It's almost certain their average high temperature will do it, not likely (but not impossible) for the low though.
I wonder if you saw the thread that was made in the weather forum about that. Just posted on there and was going to post this here.

Los Angeles(LAX)
4th Warmest February.
11th Coldest May so far

Hartford(BDL)
Coldest February
4th Warmest May so far

Just the way the Jet Stream flipped. Not going to bore you guys with the why's.

The easy answer is the Jet Stream flipped. on the left was the mean Jet stream for February. We were in the "dip" with the NorthWest flow and very Cold air.

On the right is the mean Jet for this month. We're inside the rise with mostly a South flow and very warm air.

Why did it flip? Easy answer.... Weather is a marriage of things. I'm not going to pick and choose like most meteorologists do.

But since I been following weather, I see it flipping and getting sustained all the time, any month.

One help was there were Upper Level Lows entering the PacNW. That in turned kept pushing up the SouthEast ridge. Then there was a Cutoff Low in the SW. That also pushed the Jet stream north in the East. Each time since April got stronger and stronger.

The major culprit was that Polar Vortex sitting in Southern Canada Jan/Feb/March. once that went to the other side of the Pole, Jet stream was able to dance in the U.S

Thanks so much Cambium for that explanation.

I'm just so surprised this happened, since like you said so many times in Feb, and into March that its soooo hard to change the pattern at the 500 mb level----yet that's exactly what happened of course!

Picking & choosing some stuff from NWS NY

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
1041 AM EDT SUN MAY 24 2015

Quote:

NEAR TERM THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY
  • THE RIDGING WILL PROMOTE SUBSIDENCE...KEEPING MOSTLY SUNNY CONDITIONS.
  • THE SEA BREEZE WILL BE MORE LIMITED DUE TO STRONGER SW BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW.
  • THE 850 MB TEMPS HAVE ALREADY BEEN INCREASING
  • FOR THE ATLANTIC OCEAN BEACHES...THERE IS A MODERATE RISK FOR RIP CURRENTS.
MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY

  • A SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW KEEPING A WARM AND HUMID AIR MASS IN PLACE.
  • THE AIR MASS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE DIURNALLY DRIVEN WITH BUILD UP OF CAPE AND THEREFORE INSTABILITY.
  • WITH DEW POINTS RISING AND A SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST FLOW THERE WILL BE THE INCREASING LIKELIHOOD OF STRATUS AND FOG DEVELOPING AT NIGHT INTO EARLY MORNING MID TO LATE IN THE WEEK.
  • MAY BE MORE OF A STRATUS DECK ACROSS LONG ISLAND AND POSSIBLY COASTAL CONNECTICUT WITH THE FLOW MORE SOUTHWESTERLY THAN SOUTH

Colorful map this evening. 6pm temps. 60s on Long Island and coastal CT (sea breeze), 70s out there. 80s out there as well. and 40s on top of Mt Washington.

72° here with a dewpoint of 47°. Awesome.. But I noticed 70s during the day and 70s in evening, night & morning feels much much different for me. Maybe cause I expect it to be cooler other than during the day?

Bridgeport reporting clear skies. BDL has some broken High clouds

Max temps Monday and Tuesday next week likely in the 50s and 60s. Now that is June weather I don't mind. Lol it should accompany with rain though which is also welcoming.

Hit mid 80s today and muggy. Air looked dirty

Don't get mad... I was looking back at our posts from early February. Pretty crazy to read through. There was snow and cold happening over and over, we were like its just not ending anytime soon. Little did we know it would be historic at that point and then continue into March

On that related note.. (I reminisce during hot days)

BDL hit 88°F today.
