Two issues:

1- What do feds have to do with it? CT riders have another Govt that should take care of them -- it's called -- State Govt. If the Feds do this for CT riders, they should do it for riders in all other states. Why discriminate?

It's not the fault of other states that CT chooses to fund other programs in CT rather than public transportation for its people.

2- Are we sure we want trains to get to NYC from Hartford in 60 minutes for example? Can anybody imagine the explosion of growth?

This is getting off topic but Chris Murphy has a home in Cheshire. His family moved to a rented home in DC so that he can be involved with the day-to-day raising of his two young kids. Nothing wrong with that and it is what many Congressmen and Senators do when they have young kids. Jay

The New Haven rail line is an important part of the Northeast corridor, the busiest and arguably the most important rail line in the country. It serves the most densely populated part of the country, spans multiple states and connects some of the country's largest and most important cities. Connecticut can only control or improve the Connecticut portion of the line. New York controls the New York portion. Amtrak, the quasi-public passenger rail line, operates on the tracks so of course the Federal government is involved with it. This happens not just here but across the country where rail service is supported by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The FRA provides funding support for the line. How else can Connecticut get New York to improve their tracks but get FRA to push it? It is just like their involvement in the new Hudson River tunnel crossing between New York and New Jersey or the massive California High Speed Rail project. Jay

Murphy's comment was about commuting -- Amtrak is not for that. CTDOT needs to work with the MTA, which incidently gets ZERO federal funding.

And Murphy was talking about mainly commuting to NYC. His comment about commuting to Boston is asinine. CT just got around to finally run commuter trains in the NH-Springfield 60-mile corridor, although achieved that with 50 year-old hand-me-down cars.

You are wrong. The MTA does get federal funding just like most transportation agencies.

MTA - Grant Management

The use of those 50 year old trains is temporary until new trains can be built. CT Rail was supposed to use train sets from a Shoreline East which was to get new trains that were on order. Because ridership on the New Haven line is way up, the state needed to take those new Shoreline East trains and use them on the New Haven line. That meant SE needed to keep using their trains until additional trains can be built. The state needed to find different trains for CT Rail. Trains are custom built. They are not mass produced like cars. It’s not like there is a used train store out there that the state can go to or a number of newer trains lying around unused. They found the 50 year old trains, rehabbed them and now are using them. It was the best option they could find. Jay

I actually thought Metro North was fairly decent with being on time, but this summer has been a joke. Constant delays. Barely ever on time.

Yes, I was wrong. MTA gets about $ 500k in federal grants in its annual revenue of $ 9 billion. That represents about 0.5% of its budget. Not even 1%. That’s more like a rounding error.

MTA gets subsidies from the States of New York and Connecticut and the City of New York who get subsidies from the federal government to help fund mass transit. So indirectly they do get federal assistance. Jay

I don't understand. What's stopping state of CT to run light-rail, hub-and-spoke from Hartford 10-15 miles out for example? Route 2, Manchester, Bradley/Windsor, Simsbury line, W-I84, New Britan/Newington and Wethersfield/Rocky Hill Line?

As you said, NH Haven-Springfield ridership surpassed forecasts. I believe, there will be plenty of office workers getting on these lines to go work downtown Hartford.
