This sounds very promising but history has shown you do have to be a bit skeptical about this until an actual proposal is made.

It really ridiculous to think that the facilities in Storrs can accommodate ALL UConn sports events. Gampel is way too small to accommodate all the fans of UConn mens and women basketball there. It seats just over 10,000 while XL seats more than 16,000. UConn basketball is elite college basketball. To keep it that way you need a facility that can accommodate as many fans as possible. You are not doing that in Storrs. That simple. Jay

Likely would need more seating for hockey and basketball now.
Agreed, Hartford and a revamped Civic Center would be a great spot for the return of the WHA. No question.

The most encouraging thing about this is that it's PRIVATE money that would be funding this private project. While the idea of acquiring a professional sports team is unrealistic, a refurbished arena can increase the likelihood for events on a regular basis. An indoor arena can have numerous income-generating events all throughout the year, both sports and non-sports related, so having a well-utilized venue like this can be an asset for the city. Madison Square Garden it ain't, but it can still be a popular place for events.

This would be great. The city of Hartford wants to turn a former scrapyard into a development to serve the advanced manufacturing industry. I hope it can be done. Jay

Yeah I have to agree. It’s poised for a real breakthrough and gentrification. Jay

Good opinion piece on the importance of UConn sports to Hartford. I don’t think it emphasizes enough the need for the programs playing at large venues to accommodate as many fans as possible. Plus Storrs is not exactly convenient to most of the state. Jay

It is just a crazy thought that colleges should play all their sports on campus where students live and go to school. That would mean a college exists for education and not athletics.
