Juvenile - you bet....

I think it's more a reaction to the person and not the town they are from.
Gee, thanks. How nice of you.

But as I said, most times people joke about it. It can get quite repetitive. So it's not as if they are trying to insult me - there is just a marked change in their behavior. Maybe because I have a background studying Psychology, I notice it.

You graduated from one of those high schools? I thought you moved to CT recently...

Yup, moved back after 20 years away.

And I wasn't talking about you personally!

I am new to this to this part of the state...after I graduated high school and college, moved away, now back as an adult (ok some may debate that)!

My dh is from New Canaan, and we still have friends and family there. Very normal, non-snobby friends and family. It is the newcomers who move to New Canaan that give it a bad rap, many of them feel like they have "arrived" and really put on airs. The ones who have lived there for generations are more down-to-earth. You have to meet some real New Canaan-ites to get an accurate picture. They don't like the newbies, either. And it's the people who have not grown up in New Canaan that always assume that everyone in town are snobs. There are snobs everywhere though, not just the wealthier towns.

Agreed about the newcomers. My grandparents lived in New Canaan for many years before they passed away. They were modest and down to earth - knew the value of a dollar. We lived in a tiny 3 bedroom house (their house) that has since been added onto (it's a mcmansion now ). Our neighbors were always out, waving, smiling. Because that area is so dynamic, the people have gotten worse. There are not many real New Canaan locals in town anymore - I think that can be said for much of Fairfield County and even western parts of New Haven County.
