I just want to make sure it's clear that it was the students in the Student Federation that runs the center that made this stupid decision, and not the University itself. The headline makes it sound like it was the school administrators who made the decision but it was only students. It also wasn't' a school-sanctioned or offered class, it was a free class taught in the student center by a girl who volunteered her time.
So, it's the students themselves who are a bunch of addle-brained mush-heads, and the University is merely spineless in their complicity. Thank you for the clarification.
People do realize that this happened in Canada and not the US, correct?
Thank you. I was wondering if I was going to need to point that out. Not that it really matters. This certainly could have happened in the US. Right after we erase the names and images of anyone that has ever said anything offensive or insensitive from our campuses.
I don't run around ranting about political correctness and consider myself pretty liberal. But this is nuts. Plain old nuts. What else can you say about this? And from the article, it is hard to say if more than one student complained, or if action was taken because one single student was offended.
I gotta tell you...I work in I.T. so almost everywhere I go, at least half of my coworkers are Indians.
They're not offended by Americans co-opting yoga.
Nope.
The reactions I've heard from them include:
"That's strange."
"That's funny."
"Why?"
"Do they know what yoga is for?"
"Good, yoga is good for you."
"They don't pronounce any of the words right."
The reactions I've heard from them have NEVER included:
"I'm offended by that."
Really. They roll their eyes, sigh, or simply shrug at WORST.
I don't think Indians need student unions deciding FOR them what is offensive and what isn't. They're fully capable of deciding that for themselves. However, most Indians I've met have been so phlegmatic that the SJW probably think they're speechless from PTSD.
On university owned property and in university owned buildings.
The university said/did nothing..silent complicity.
What is there to say? It's stupid, but it doesn't violate anyone's rights. They allowed the students total control to run the Student Federation. What would you like the University to say? Why should they even care if there is yoga available at the Student Federation, let alone publicly address it? Again, it is silly to me, but no one is being discriminated against or anything else that would necessitate the University involving themselves in this issue. It's the students decision not to have yoga, stupid but not a big deal...don't blow it out of proportion.
Do they say what exactly is offensive, This is ridiculous.
