The US is placing the first portions of the AMD system in Eastern Europe. This is not intended to protect Europe from the likes of Iran. It's to protect Europe from Russian intermediate range missiles.

I agree with Russia. It is a threat to Russia and Russia is right to be concerned. Russia did not walk away from the IMF treaty to limit nuclear weapons throughout the northern hemisphere. America did. Russia has not imposed its will on countries half way around the world by means of war. Russia has not killed 100s of 1000s of people in the name of "democracy".

Russia is not the one up setting the balance.

Get ready to pay.

All you Europeans need to get comfortable with all those megatons over the horizon. Aimed at you.

Not picking nits here but what if anything has recent events in the Crimea and the Ukraine showed us?

As suggested though; I agree with the concept of Europe perhaps engaging Russia with more forcefulness itself rather than just sitting there and going: "oh it's just Putin rattling his garbage cans at 5 AM out in the driveway again, we'll call the U.S. in the morning" ....and then rolling over to go back to sleep.

Why the hell don't they create a huge U.N. boondoggle over Russia's actions to the point Russia's citizens begin to take note his shirtless horseback riding, muscle flexing persona is getting them nowhere but backward?

It does seem ridiculous to spend great heaps of money to guard against an old enemy that might not even be an enemy any more.

I'm more concerned with North Korea developing a long range missile and Iran getting the bomb despite Obamas efforts.

Our real enemy now and for the foreseable future is a radical islamic terrorist and nuclear missiles are not the answer for that vermin.
The real threat would come from isis or some other radical group seizing a nuclear weapon and threatening to launch it or if that weapon is small enough to walk it over the mexican border and bring it to one of our cities.

If Trump gets in he will smooth things over with his buddy Putin and as much as people fear Trump having his finger on the nuclear launch button, Nuclear war is bad for business and makes real estate worthless when it is bathed in radioactivity so why would Trump want to launch missiles?

We're just playing again. Russian has too much pride not to follow. It's not about defense literally it's about defense economically.

Russia's only real economy is exporting energy and minerals.

A kind of it's not the sellers that hold the keys, it's the buyers now.

How do you keep energy down in Europe? Ball-n-chain Russia to more defense spending and ship liquid natural gas to Europe with love from the US. It's not that we can ship it cheaper but cheaper than their manipulated price. And it's not about even shipping gas really but the massive power transfer it swings back to Europe. I mean how much power does a country have when their enemy supplies all their energy?

Low Oil, Sanctions, Undercut Commodities...Russia is that man shot three times and just won't die. The US with this defense move is just kind of *sigh* Why do you make me hurt you so? Pew pew pewpewpew...

The US is an aggressive power. Ukraine was a coup the ousting of a legitimately elected president and the attempted oppression of a people defending their human rights which resulted in over 6000 people losing their lives. Not only that this escapade is nothing less than the deprivation of a nation of its own destiny.

America needs enemies, anyone is eligible for that dubious title. There's too many generals who need paychecks, too many politicians with investments in the MIC and jobs in the war industries to not have enemies.

War is just a form of business. Money changes hands and fortunes are made.

I think the truth about Russia is that they are powerful in their realm in a defensive sense. I don't think Russia could defeat the western powers in a conventional conflict but one thing for sure is the price for the defeat of Russia would be horrendous. I also question if it would ever end.

Russia is not capable conventionally of inflicting great harm on Europe. It's not even worth discussing.

Nuclear war with Russia would put both sides back into the stone age. With the large cities and industrial centers in the west it's the west that would suffer by far the most. Go this route, it's all over.

People need to keep in mind that there are politicians and nutjobs in power that think that there is no price for others to pay so long as they're receiving the payments.

Russia has done nothing more than keeping the peace on it's borders and near abroad. If they start building robot subs with 70 megaton warheads on them I know who to blame.
