Thank you for pointing out that it was the friend who made the fuss on social media, Tex. The misconception was bothering me, too. By the way the friend's prom outfit is also pictured on a variety of websites.

Seems pretty clear from your own words that overweght is the issue. That you are overweight yourself doesn't make that any less the case, in fact, it could very well be the reason you do have an issue with a voluptuous and, yes, curvy young lady looking great in a dress that flatters her figure. Being overweight yourself in a culture like ours can lead to weight issues in general.
And it was her friend that "cried on social media", in other words, got the word out about the hypocrisy.
You don't know me and cannot even begin to guess if I have an issue with someone who is overweight, not voluptious or curvy however, whatever you believe MUST be true. Bless you.
No, high schools with dress codes do not always send out guidelines for prom. The only thing posted about our high school's prom was that it was formal. That's it.
Then I guess there wasn't a dress code for the prom. This girl's school obviously had one.
Exactly. A neckline that would have covered her boobs would have likely looked frumpy. Who wants to look frumpy when they're an eighteen (or close enough) year old woman? It was an elegant choice that didn't make her look like she'd come straight off the Prairie.

This is wonderful style of gown for someone of this body type. Kudos to her and whoever else had input on the choice.
For those who are not familiar with selecting styles of dress when one has a larger bust, the general rule of thumb is to avoid high necklines or any extra fabric around the area. Of course, this will generally mean that some cleavage will be shown.

Cleavage is fine for a grown woman, not a teenager in school.
An 18 year old female graduating senior in high school is a woman, you know. She can sign contracts, buy a house, a car, and get married. The wisdom of making those decisions at that age can be debated, but it is still legal to do so.
