Not in my neck of the woods. If this is common behavior in your schools, GET OUT.

Guess who gets disciplined when a teacher allows a student who's on a no pass status out of the room unescorted (I'll help you out-it ain't the kid).
Besides, it's not like the teachers themselves are allowed to leave a room full of 11-year-olds unaccompanied if they really really have to pee, either. I've heard of some teachers who actually wear Depends as backup.

So when you have to take a real dump (not just pee), you can leave one class, take the 2-4 minute walk to the next class, and toss in taking the dump and cleaning yourself up all in that 4 minutes. Good for you.

It occurs to me that:

The average parent often has trouble managing one kid successfully at all times, yet some of you expect a school to manage 1,000 students successfully at all times.

The average parent thinks their kid would never do anything significantly wrong...that it's always someone else's kid doing the bad stuff.

Time yourself. You have 4 minutes to take a dump and walk half a block.

To be honest, I think some of you have had a lobotomy and have forgotten your own days in school.

I'm not totally sure what the uproar is here. Sure it's embarrassing for this kid and it seems as if it was an unfortunate accident. But is it really worth everyone spending so much time dwelling on this?

In a school of 900 kids and 180 school days a year, that's 162,000 opportunities for a child to have an accidental bathroom situation. In the article it stated that 3 kids have supposedly had an accident this year. That's less than .000018% of total 'opportunities' for a kid to pee himself vs. make it to a restroom. Not really a huge problem and doesn't warrant a policy change.

It should have been handled between the parents and the teacher/administration. I'm sure the teacher felt bad and this will never happen again to their child. Why would the parents want the media involved and put everyone in the world on notice that their kid couldn't hold it for 40 minutes?

What are you talking about? The child had to pee. He didn't Moderator cut: . himself.

I understand that. But some people have been saying that students should take care of bathroom needs in between classes. I've been in schools where that was 3 minutes. In my school it was 4.

I had a kid in my first grade class who used to throw up every day. All of a sudden Charlie would leap out of his chair and run for the bathroom but never make it. He threw up in the class or the hallway or in the water fountain. The Janitor, whose name was Mr. Dick and who was related to me, would come with his big mop. We'd hear Charlie throwing up and all the kids would yell, "Time to call Mr. Dick."

I forgot about that until this thread. I saw Charlie recently at our 40-year high school reunion. He has been a police officer for 35 years now. I wish I'd remembered about his puking so that I could have made fun of him in front of everyone. Damn. Now I have to wait a few more years.

And they also have lunch, and some middle schools still have recess. Then there is also before school and after school to take care of your business. Children are not in school 24/7. Unless there is a medical problem, should not have to constantly be using the restroom during the 6-7 hours they are at school.
