With due respect to the very talented and much missed Ms. Fisher; I think that if she so disliked the public focus on her appearance, enough to possibly object to Steve Martin's saying that 40 years ago he thought she was gorgeous, she picked the wrong career to start out in, i.e. being an actress.
Well, yeah. But I think she was, what, 18 when she was cast in Star Wars? 19? Which then blew up to be this huge pop culture phenomenon.

You really have no understanding of Carrie Fisher. Basically, you're trying to protect Jeff Ross with a vagina from being offended because of her gender.
Frankly, I think the defense of Carrier Fisher as if she were some wilting flower is the most offensive thing in the entire discussion.
Holy do you guys just think she was Princess Leia?
Seriously, stop protecting a woman wayyyy stronger than any of you and couching it as any sort of pro-feminism. It's not, quite the opposite.
RIP Carrie Fisher, you were not JUST princess leia despite the ignorance of the masses.

t.
Would you say the same of Danny Devito?
Or most male actors (who frankly are barely average looking)?
Ludicrous to think this was anything besides a wonderfully nice comment about Carrie Fischer, by a wonderful man.
Those of us old enough to know why he is saying this are not at all offended. Carrie was in the original Star Wars....and went on to be a wonderful comedic actress and author who shared her personal struggles.
RIP Ms. Carrie Fischer
And it's not a "given" that a good-looking person (male or female) is smart, actually.
There is zero reason to think that they wouldn't be.
Frankly I thought his tweet was actually kind of sweet.
But I don't think people are living in reality or some of these posts. Or making very weak arguments about why it's okay to say things about how women look vs. how smart they are.
"When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well." by Steve Martin.
I agree that Steve Martin's comment was not offensive at all. It was a compliment! It would not rank in the top 500 offensive comments made in the past year for me!
What I don't like about the comment is that you'd never hear (or read) the same thing said about a guy. Because it's never surprising to find out that looks and smarts can co-exist in the same guy. But for some reason, it seems surprising when talking about a woman.....
Baloney!!!!!!!
I have heard women say about some handsome guy"....and, you know, he's really smart too!"
People seem not to expect that attractive women and men are going to have brains in addition to their looks.
The comment Martin made was zero offensive...unless you are desperately looking to be offended.
Sorry, but just because I see the way you look at things does not mean I agree with your perspective.
