I hate that he caved in and deleted the tweet.

Don't let the perpetually outraged types who read insult into every freaking thing win

After all, he did say creature, people need to lighten up. Steve Martin is the least likely person out there wanting to offend anyone!

Speaking of keeping it light - how about laying off all the political comments (deleted a bunch). This isn't the thread or the forum for that.

I would say that in his world, there are many very beautiful women, but not quite as many that are smart and witty as well. He has been in the entertainment biz for a long time. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of smart and witty women in the world, or that beautiful women cannot also be smart and witty. It just means he's surrounded by starlets and bimbos who objectify themselves all the time.

Good point. It's possible that once he got to interact with her, he saw those other qualities as well. Nah he's just being a mean ol' sexist pig, let's automatically go with that.

It also shows that he didn't really know her very well (or didn't really pay attention to her) since she long spoke out against sexualization and objectification. I know his heart was in the right place, but Carrie wouldn't really have appreciated the comment. Of course, she would have said something in response that was biting and witty while at the same time gracious.
Personally I find it very distasteful for you to speak for a dead person like this. You really don't know if she would have appreciated the comment or not. You reasoning behind her not liking the comment is particularly flawed in that Martin did not engage in any sexualization or objectification whatsoever.

Look folks, I never said I was offended by the comment, I can just see why people took his comment the way they did.

No, his comment was not 'tone deaf' in the slightest. It had nothing whatsoever to do with sexualization or objectification.

You should read Penn Gillettes tribute to Carrie Fisher where he recalled her asking if he wanted to grab her breasts while attending a national porn awards show.

Google for the whole article if it's not still up on CNN....Carrie Fisher was a brilliant strong woman 30 years ahead of her time and I find it insulting that people think Martins comments were insensitive to her. In fact, it just shows that you really don't know about her and just latched onto a news article out of cluelessness.

Sorry, but just because I see the way you look at things does not mean I agree with your perspective.

With due respect to the very talented and much missed Ms. Fisher; I think that if she so disliked the public focus on her appearance, enough to possibly object to Steve Martin's saying that 40 years ago he thought she was gorgeous, she picked the wrong career to start out in, i.e. being an actress.

I thought that Steve Martin was poking gentle fun at his much younger self, for seeing Carrie Fisher only as a beautiful girl, and then going on to discover that she was intelligent and funny. I still don't see anything wrong in someone meeting a man or a woman, or seeing them in a movie, and being bowled over by the person's good looks. Yes, I appreciated that Princess Leia was smart and snarky in the Star Wars trilogy; but if I had been a young man, I probably would have been pretty much bowled over by the sight of her in the metal bikini. (as a movie-goer, I was pleased that she used the chain to strangle the piggish and very definitely sexist Jabba).

If you're thinking of a man or woman you've met and liked in a romantic sense only in terms of the person's physical attractiveness, that could lead to disappointment and failed expectations in a long-term relationship; but it is often what happens. Steve Martin wasn't doing so in his tweet.
