I thought they determined the blood dripping down the outside wall was actually motor oil. Was it not?

I don't know, but the images sure looked like blood, not motor oil.

Internet users are calling the images "photoshopped" by the DailyMail, but I haven't seen anything saying it was motor oil.

If they saw the body (bodies) and didn't characterize it as a brutal murder, THAT's the only thing that's absolutely unreasonable, and in fact, not believable.

There was blood dripping down the outside wall of that house, for heaven's sake, and the cops had never seen such a gruesome scene.

It's not believable that the girls saw one of the stabbing victims, called yet more people over to the house and they all decided the person was unconscious and passed out.

If they had characterized it as it was, there would certainly have been more than one cop show up to do the initial call.
I skimmed your post as I often do. So lets take the theoretical purse or shoes out of the driveway and put them wherever, and the kids were banging on the door or calling on the phone and couldn't wake anyone up. I'm not sure they would use the word "unconscious" in that scenario.

One theory, again, is that Ethan was in the hallway, and the hallway was dark. They knew something was really wrong, but being 20-year-olds with undeveloped coping skills, they freaked, ran outside, and called Ethan's brother.

You can find it believable or not. Like I said, we'll have to disagree. I should probably clarify again that I'm not saying that this is without a doubt what happened; just that it's a theory that's been kicking around and one that personally find within the realm of possibility.

The image did look kind of fake, but if that is what they got a picture of, they can't control what it looks like. At any rate I think we can safely assume that there was a lot of blood. If the victims bleed out that would have been about 6 gallons of blood splattered around the place.

The rumor was that it was heating oil, not motor oil.

It has since been established that the home is heated by electricity.
