you should ask specific questions and indicate where you will be working because communting in the area is very challenging so most people are smart and try to live close enough to work to make traffic manageable

Wow, that's a can of worms! Why do you think you'd like to come here? Do you work? Do you have friends/family here? Why DFW? Do you just want to cross the pond and be in the states?
DFW is a wonderful place but like anywhere else it's not perfect. July-September is blazing hot. We have about 2 ice storms a winter. I don't think it's rained here since Adam was a kid. And we have to put up with the Cowboys football team (although they've won 3 in a row), and now the Mavs stink. And JR died. Every square inch of highway is under construction and will be until '15. Traffic is almost as bad as Boston or NYC.
But folks here are friendly and helpful. You'll get lot's of info from posters here.

Do you already have a job lined up? If so, where is it?
What is your budget for housing?

BigDGeek, I don't have a job lined up as I'm not finished studying yet. I just wanted a little bit of info from people who live here on the lifestyle ect as Looking on the web only gives you so much I wanted to chat to get a personal opinion.

IIRC, a nurse midwife here in the US has an MSN (master's degree in nursing) instead of an associate's degree or BSN. I'm sure people will correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know how strong the demand is here for nurse midwives, but there are plenty of freshly-trained AA and BSN-trained nurses looking for work around here. Hospitals and clinics want experienced nurses. I recommend you work as a nurse midwife for at least a couple of years in the UK before trying to move over here.

The best thing to do is to try to network. Having said that I can't think of how to do it but google is a good start. Look for "Dallas midwife". It would be so much easier for you if you had a contact here before you came, whether it be a person or company.

Trust me, you'll find DFW as warm a place on the planet, with wonderful people. If you come, welcome!

Check out this thread: http://www.city-data.com/forum/dalla...uk-dallas.html

The biggest problem you're going to face will be finding a sponsor to bring you in. You can't just up and move to Texas, at least not legally. You will have to have a sponsor. Most immigrants have an employment-based sponsor and some have a family member sponsor.

The hospital I work for doesn't do labor and delivery, so I'm unfamiliar with the market for a nurse midwife. It would, however, be safe to say that it's going to be tough to find an employer willing to sponsor in today's economy...

Thanks bigDgeek. While studying i also have a job in a hospital as a support worker which will give me about 3 years experience and after I finish my course it takes 18 months for a visa so I will have about 4 years experience. I just wanted some info on general living as I have a young son I need to be 100% sure he'll be happy wherever we move to.
