Why non-religious schools? That's an odd exception. A school is a school isn't it?

This makes me feel terrible for early grade kids and high school juniors and seniors.

You can thank our dear Texas AG Ken Paxton for that decision.

And feel free to vote for any living thing running against him in 2022.

I know

It just spread so much at all these summer camps and restaurants (where people are in prolonged close quarters) that I can’t imagine schools not having kids and/or teachers test positive within days of reopening. Every friend I have whose kids have been in daycare since the SIP order ended have had covid shutdowns (not every single classroom, but every single school). Just had another friend - who works full time - get the email this morning that school (daycare) is cancelled for 14 days.

I hope our preschool will be ok since the kids are literally with 9 kids and 1 teacher for just a few hours a day a few days a week but at this point I have no expectations.

Religious schools are protected and immune to the virus.

Bag on Paxton all you'd like but he's simply being practical. The state does not have the power to tightly regulate small group religious gatherings. There would be instant lawsuits etc.

It smells bad but it's the right call.

So why shouldn't a non-religious school get to do what they want ?

I get it. It would potentially end up at the Supreme Court if covid drags on that long.

But I also wish we lived in a country where those arguing for religious freedoms would also practice loving their neighbors as much as they love themselves. You know, like Jesus religion and not Republican religion.

Because they can't use religious freedom as a tool in court........you know the whole separation of church and state thing in a state setting.

As you may recall I'm an atheist so I don't have any skin in the religious game as it were. Keeping the state in any form so much as possible out of religious activities/practices has been a hallmark of civil liberty in this country for a very long time. Frankly, and as you know it was a founding ideal of our country.

For the record there are legions of US based religious people who are not republicans.
