The question is pretty much in the title! Coming from NY, the school district there allowed parents to choose any school within the district provided there was space available on the condition that parents are responsible for transportation to and from the school.

Anything similar in Plano ISD? Thanks!

You have e to apply for a transfer and not all schools are available. The link above has info for the next year.

Thank you for the link. The situation is this, kids go to a middle school based on their parent's primary residence in Plano. Say if parents want to move to another area within Plano that is served by a different middle school within PISD.

Can parents keep the old middle school enrollement? Is there a process for this or it's not possible at all?

It's been done, growing up I knew several people who had moved within Plano but since their kid had another year to go at a particular school, they kept them in that school. It was middle school (Schimelpfenig) and then when they were to go to 9th-10th grade they would have ended up going to the same school anyway IIRC.

I don't know the process they went through, or if they simply didn't notify the district. This was over 20 years ago as well.

Middle really shouldn't be an issue especially if going to 8th and will end up at same hs anyway. Plenty of kids do it. But you can get a feel for if transfers are likely depending on school. Most schools are easy to transfer into. And doesn't have big changes from year to year. So you can call the school to find out or just try asking around.

And if you move during school year then it should be no issue at all based on what i've heard from my kids.

One student is in 6th grade and the other is in 7th grade. So if we ended up needing to move next year within Plano, I think would not be an issue for 7th grader (who will be in 8th grade next year) but for 7the grader, it may depend on school's discretion.

It’s always best to check with the district to avoid disappointment. They are very accommodating unless school is full and they’ve to give priority to students who actually live in that zone.

Of course check with PISD, but this is my understanding:

Yes, I think PISD allows the student to finish the year where they are, regardless of the move. But you would need to request a transfer for the younger one for the year after next. Of course, no guarantees.

Just FYI, one middle school that has been closed for transfers for forever is Renner.

I have an 8th grader that is currently a transfer within PISD since 7th grade. From our experience PISD is very accomodating.

Thank you for your replies, it's really helpful. The reason for asking the question is to decide where to move within Plano and if that means we'll have to change kids school. Is this is a straightforward conversation with school office to let them know that we are thinking of moving to another location within Plano but would want to continue sending the kids to their current school? I assume PISD wouldn't pick up kids from another area to bus them to their old school? Parents will have to be responsible for transportation.
