The Spartan store was at Sheridan and Jewell. Across the parking lot from it was an Albertson's. In the '70s it got turned into a home improvement store called Handy Dan's. I don't remember what happened to it after that but it's a Safeway now.

Alas poor Safeway is dead as well. It closed about 2 years ago, and nothing has replaced it.

That area of town has been doing poorly commercially for some time. About 5 years before Safeway closed, the Target store was shuttered. It is a dollar store of some type.

The Bear Valley Mall closed about 15-20 years ago and has been reborn as a strip mall anchored by a very large King Soopers and a Home Depot. Albertsons, which had moved to Dartmouth and Sheridan, closed at least 10 years ago but has since been reborn as a Walmart neighborhood market.

Thanks for the update, I hadn't been past the Safeway for a while, evidently.

I remember that the Bear Valley Walmart market, before it was an Albertsons, was a King Soopers. The current Bear Valley King Soopers is where the May D&F used to be. A lot of things changed in that shopping center except that Hodel's held on for a long time, now I think it's a dollar store kind of thing.

We moved to Denver from Dallas in 1976. There was also a Bobby McGee's in Dallas, where we ate many a good crab leg dinner. Didn't go to the Denver one so much, but later, when I was single, my girlfriends and I would go dancing at the Denver Bobby McGee's. I think the Denver location closed in the mid-eighties / late eighties.

Hi all, I grew up a block and a half south of the Drumstick on Locust St. Does anyone remember Ross Hardware that was just across and slightly east on Colfax from the Drumstick? Just a great hardware store that sold everything from bicycles to fishing tackle.
