OMG! The fun! (for me, not for Artie) It was like a party trick, I'm not even kidding.
Jeremy "assembled" the collar, filled the container with citronella, and sized the collar while I was folding laundry. Artie could smell the citronella while it was being put into the container, so he wouldn't let Jeremy put the collar on him. Of course, he let ME put it on him, because *I* would never do him harm, right? HA!
And then we let Artie loose into the backyard (fenced-in, of course) and we stood on the deck, willing a squirrel to enter Artie's yard. There was no squirrel, but something else got Artie's attention -- perhaps a leaf falling off a tree, or a leaf being blown by the wind, or he smelled another dog within a two-mile radius.
And he barked. And we saw the spray. And we saw Artie look down at the collar contraption with such a WTF? look on his face, that we cracked up. And then it happened again. Bark. Shpritz. WTF? And then... that was it. No more barking.
We needed an even better test, though. This left too much to chance. So when Artie came up on the deck, Jeremy started hugging me. Affection between Jeremy and I is a no-no in Artie's books. In Artie's mind, I belong to Artie and nobody else is allowed to touch me. So, Jeremy's hugging me, Artie barks, citronella sprays, WTF?, and that's it. Jeremy continued to hug me, Artie tried to climb up my leg, and then he just stood there and watched us.
Honestly, we could not stop laughing. This was magical.
We can only hope it will happen again tomorrow. Because with Artie? Miracles occur... and then they cease. We shall see.
Well, I'd congratulate you two but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Artie may have something up his sleeve. I'd be careful if I were you, very, very carefu.l

Artie will probably go out back in a bit while Jeremy's out on the deck grilling. But it's dark out already and Artie doesn't bark (as much) in the dark because the squirrels have gone to their homes.

I wish I could be that fast to be able to get a camera and shoot a picture, but the look is so quick. But Jeremy and I caught it every time because it's SO unlike Artie. OMG, I'm laughing now, all over again, it was hilarious.
I've been watching this thread with interest because I've been thinking about the same time. Ringo's early morning barkfests are not endearing us to the neighbors.
AND, now that my Dad is here playing doorman all day; I know that he cannot hear Ringo barking. Who knows how long he leaves Ringo out there barking his fool head off? I appear to be the only one in this household that can actually hear Ringo barking while outside. Sigh.
Hmmm. Perhaps it's time to consider the citronella collar.
