America is funding the SDF, which conveniently gets ignored by Russian press for liberating Raqqa from ISIS. What Russia does is send its guys to get killed in the desert.

More like it was the American's that autumn who were taking over Italy right next door and setting up bombing runs into Bulgaria and Romania that got their attention. Actually this was preceded by the Germans halting their offensive in Russia (which had retaken Kharkov and other areas) because the Americans had taken Sicily with far better precision and decisiveness than their Russian adversaries could even retake Russian territory. Hitler still thought he could grind out a victory over Russia due to the body count differential but with the Americans he was losing the kill/killed ratio badly.
In any case the action to save the Bulgarian Jews started in March of 1943, hardly a time when the Russians appeared to be on their way anytime soon.
Oh and the decimation of the Romanian and Italian divisions at hte opening of operation Uranus and Saturn in the the winter of 1942 '43 had nothing to do with it.
