It's easier to run a country when its population is small, I mean, all Scandinavian countries for instance are below 10m, most just around 5m. Some are not even Euro and/or EU countries, which helps a lot as well.

Japan is abour 126 million and far more developed and technologically advanced than tons of tiny countries all over whe world, the population argument is just an excuse.

But for worshipers of all things Nordic they pull up a statistic showing how England isn't good enough, but when you go to England everything is better. The people make jokes, have fun, they live and have souls. They have a somewhat diverse population and are capable of accepting people from different backgrounds.
Truth. Scandinavia's fine for visiting, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Japan is a big machine, I would not want to live there if they asked me to. Technologically they are very good, but society is rather rigid and hierarchical, lots of rituals etc. I could never be happy in a culture like that.

Social progress, what does that even mean? Not every change is a good one.
Germany is also big and quite a mess the closer you look.

I do like the Netherlands, I felt good there, but I did not perceive it as a Nordic country at all. Neither do I consider Britain a Nordic country, let alone Ireland. They are simply West European to me.

Sorry as a guy living in a Southern European country (Italy) I can only ENVY everybody living up north, and for very concrete, down-to-earth reasons: people there get a much higher salary for the same job, and enjoy a much stronger protection against the straights of unemployment.
I don't know about the battle "northern Germanic countries vs Anglophere countries", perhaps it's a tie, but compared to countries in southern Europe (and most everywhere else in the world) indeed those northern Germanic countries resemble utopia on Earth.

Not Scandinavian as being directly Related to Sweden or Norway. But there are many simiarities and connections between Netherlands, Denmark and the Northern areas of Germany. They all were connected by hanseatic league, and even many populations inhabitated those three areas such as the case of the Frisians, mainly north-sea trade oriented populations.

Still, the Netherlands feel very different from Scandinavian countries in my view.
There is indeed a continuous culture across the NW German border, but interestingly, Germany is the more successful, the further south you go, whereas the more Nordic parts of it are the poorer ones.
The Northern half of Italy is also a pretty rich, progressive region. Not Nordic at all, though.

I guess progress also depends on whether there is a need for progress. Israel for instance is pretty advanced as a result of its location and everything that comes with it. The vast regions around it are almost like developing countries compared to it as there is no pressure on them.

The Nordic Countries seem to have a very bipolar position on these forums. For other it's paradise on earth with lovely social progress, to other it's a miserable hellhole of socialist fanatics and all individualism is frowned upon.

I have a secret for you. It's neither.

Excessive admiration is stupid, we have our share of problems like all other countries in the world. And I have another secret for you. We too have corruption and ineffectivity.

India would score also high if it wasn't per person but overall.

Almost one in three people in Monaco is a millionaire. Are you now suggesting that one in three in Norway is millionaire? Macau and Hong Kong will also easily outscore Norway in that regards.

What places Norway extremely high is their high average wages - however...even there the US beats everyone else:

^ Interestingly Ireland is almost the same as America here...

and:

i can't see the big difference between "wealthy" and "rich"....perhaps "wealthy" will be the lesser version of rich? but in this case why worship the "lesser version"?
Why do some people believe that everyone who lives in Norway is rich or a millionaire!?! That is a lie that I dont know why anyone would believe.

Oslo city is ranked number 7 in the world where most millionaires live, but all cities in Norway are not like Oslo. There are small towns in Norway that looks like ****, and those who live there are certainly not millionaires The Top 20 Cities With The Most Millionaires

You also forgot immigrants. White Americans (almost exclusively right-wing) that praise the efficiency and work ethic of the Nordic countries (economic model aside), is due to some perception that the Nordic countries are 99.9% white
