Woolworth's and WT Grant were 5 &10 cent stores when I was a kid. My grandma would take me to the soda fountains for ice cream or Lime Rickies. All the ladies behind the counter had bleach blond hair and hickies on their neck (not that I knew what that was).
We had a downtown with department stores, Denholm's, Marcus', were the main stores. At Marcus', there was an elevator attendant.
When we took the bus downtown, we wore high heels and white gloves. This was in the 50s and 60s.
Since those days, a central mall was constructed, and has since been closed. I have not lived there for 45 years, so I'm out of the loop.
I've been gone from CA a long time. Didn't know May Company, Bullock's and Robinson's were gone. Plus Mervyn's.
LOL - Bullocks, a "rich, old lady store"---my husband's aunt shopped there all the time. She was a "rich, old lady", too.
The Broadway, I. Magnin, and the grand dame of them all, Bullocks Wilshire, also went away in the early-mid 90s. The old Bullocks Wilshire structure was preserved as a law school. Along Wilshire Blvd. in BH, where all the luxury department stores once stood, only Saks and Neiman Marcus remain.
Anybody remember Buffum's? Another rich old lady store.
I know we had them in southern CA, but none were near where I grew up. They were located outside of Los Angeles, if I remember correctly. South Bay, maybe?
Someone upthread mentioned J.J. Newberry, a store I hadn't thought of in decades. I used to buy candy there on the way home from junior high. Ditto Woolworth's.
I bought my first appliance for my first apartment (a microwave oven) at Montgomery Ward.
