I was a punk. I had purple hair, shaved on the sides (I'm female, BTW). Back then people literally thought you were a criminal or a degenerate when you had funny-colored hair and wore black clothes.
Anyone remember the prarie/pioneer dresses of the late 80s?
Oh yes. ALso tiered dresses/skirts. And I seem to remember a LOT of eyelet? I was living in Israel and Indian clothing was all the rage (from the continent of india, not native Americans). We wore these long flowy cotton dresses and skirts.
Shoulder pads were hard to avoid. *everything* has them. I used to take them out.
My hair was naturally *big*, I remember more*shag* haircuts (or was that the 70s?)
Rocked the blue eyeshadow, glitter and platoon pants.
I must of been Rastah since I braided/beaded my hair. I crimped my hair once and my husband thought I had electrocuted myself... He was more preppy style .. While I just kinda mixed up my own style. I admired Cindy Lauper but no way could I pull off that much frilly clothes and makeup. I'd look like a clown.
My sons grew up wearing granimals, they still laugh at those and the underoos!
I had big hair and shoulder pads. Husband didn't have a mullet, though. He had hair like John Ritter on Three's Company, but a little longer. He didn't like for me to roll down the windows in the car because it messed up his hair.
I have always had very straight, boring hair that grows in back until it touches my collar, then stops. So I couldn't rock the mullet, and didn't like the center-part look. I kept my hair short and wore a fedora, or an "English driving cap"... (I don't know the real name of that type of hat, but you know the one I mean.)
I miss the long, blood-red nails many women were sporting back then. Those nails went great with the big hair.
I am curious about something. For men, did you have a Mullet? For women, did you have the big hair and shoulder pads? I think the 80s was the craziest decade for fashion/style for both men and women. Did you really like it?
Shoulder pads, when not too extreme, tend to flatter and increase the hourglass shape of a woman's figure.
I recall big hair was earlier than shoulder pads, though all the female country singers seem to have always had big hair.
I have naturally big hair. So I didn't do much to it except wear it in long layers and feathered around my face. I wore the French braid from time to time.
I wore lots of jeans with big, thick leg warmers, and flat slouch boots. In those days it was hard to avoid padded shoulders, as they were in everything. So I had blazers, sweaters, and dresses with lightly padded shoulders. I never cared for the exaggerated, quarterback look.
