I understand the point but your rant got side tracked with the rape assumption. I do agree with the rest. I find spandex pants to be offensive and disgusting.
I absolutely love the shapely curves of a woman so when the spandex era started, I was just like the average man...yeah! Over time, the constant flashing in my face has become too much and I think its very very degrading to women. This generation of women leave absolutely nothing to the imagination because its all there in its glory. I am sooo happy to be out of the dating scene.
several posts are comparing this to wearing pajamas. do most women wear skin-tight clothing to bed ?
women can say/do/wear/... whatever they want; i just find it oblivious for the women that ask me why men stare at women in yoga pants so much. they claim that they dont look their best (they wear them to be comfortable and are not trying to look cute) so they just throw something on real quick to just go to the store or something. anything that forms the outline and jiggleness of a nice fit/fat booty is excitable to the opposite sex.

Here are some examples of Yoga Pant Fails -- pretty funny . I think these are the ones people are complaining about.
My eyes!!!!
None of that is the fault of the yoga pant. You put on any piece of clothing too small and it won't be good.

No....comfort, especially when you're on the floor and then on the sofa then outside and up and down the steps...all the things active grandmas do while happily playing with their grandkids.
The key to any spandex bottoms is a loose fitting swirly tunic top. Doing a form fitting top with a form fitting bottom really looks workout wear. The rules has always been tight on top, loose on the bottom, and tight on the bottom, loose on top. It balances the look.
I actually like the look of leggings with loose, super-long tunics, but I haven't found many that are long enough to cover everything, so I mainly use leggings as a second pair of tights under jeans in cold weather. I don't know whether I just have a long torso or whether there's not a market for extremely long tops, because people think their spandexy, jersey-ish bottoms provide adequate coverage. Maybe if more long tops were available, people would wear them and we would be spared views like those in those awful photos. Although if those folks knew how they looked from the rear, and sometimes from the front, I suspect they wouldn't walk out the front door.
I assume they wear it because it's comfortable and looks attractive to them and/or men. Obviously with any trend some people are going to be "doing it wrong" but you can find "fat" people wearing jeans too so let's not blame it all on athleisure clothing. (That's the industry term for it.)
This reminds me of the fashion for low-rider jeans some years ago. All young women (and a few older women) wore them, whether they were suited to them or not. As a result, there was a lot of muffin-top flapping around.
People need to figure out what looks attractive on them, and wear that, instead of trying to stuff themselves into whatever's trending at any given moment.

Women should be able to wear or not wear anything they want. I appreciate catching a glimpse of a well toned lady in yoga pants. My gaze never lingers long enough to make anyone uncomfortable. Never. Rarely.
My girlfriend always dresses sexy in those leggings and spandex I am not a big fan but as long as it is not hurting anybody I do not care. Too much unwanted attention thou.
