I follow Alton Brown's (Good Eats) rule that if it's not charcoal, it's not grilling.

He says gas grills are just upside down broilers.

That said, I've had plenty of yummy food other people made on gas grills, but I'll stick to my good old Weber kettle grill.

We definitely prefer charcoal grills, but, neither DH, nor I, want to start the fire. I can remember having an electric grill starter many years ago, I wonder if they sell them still. There's something about the charcoal taste that makes meat taste so good.
We have a gas grill now, however, we rarely use it for just the two of us.

YouTube - Great Depression Cooking Ep:1 - Pasta with Peas

This is a wonderful link in which some smart young feller decided to video tape Clara.....a 91 year old woman cooking Depression era dishes and recalling the hard times and how they got through it. She is an absolute doll! If you take the time to watch it.....I guarentee you will love her to pieces....and also get some ideas about frugality and eating good. I love her tip about turning off the stove before the dish is done cooking and let it cook on its own to save a little bit of gas.

She probably wouldn't approve of the fact that I turned on a burner full blast for a couple minutes yesterday just to burn the skin off a jalapeno.

Hawaii: they make weber grills with electric starters, but they cost a lot more.

We normally use the chimney starter you stuff with newspaper but I had to go the lighter fluid method yesterday.

That was so cool elston! I watched it and was amazed at how great Clara looked and acted at 91 years old. Doesn't look like depression cooking hurt her one bit!! Thanks for sharing that!

Hey guys and gals! Thanks so much for the birthday wishes. I had a great weekend and was absolutely lazy yesterday. It was great!!

Happy birthday to Katsmeeyow today too!!

Last night I had a couple of friends over for dinner and I made a tomato and spinach soup with a pesto drizzle that is simple and delicious. Also made artichoke and spinach "lasagna", although I didn't feel like layering lasagna so I used penne instead and but it in a casserole dish with lots of mozzarella and garlic/herb feta. It was great too. Had garlic bread on the side and had some ice cream cake for dessert. I am still stuffed!!

Tonight is leftovers from yesterday. Taking Jack to the vet after work and then later on picking up BF from the airport. I am excited to see him!!

Have a great day! Lacey -- hope the scan goes well for your hubby.

Morning all to many pages to catch up on. Sigh, weekends stink three kids and hubby fighting over the computer, I don't even get a chance.

Tonight for dinner shredded chicken sandwiches. Basically make a chicken fricassee (sp) and put the meat on bread instead of rice. Nothing too hard or fancy.

Hope everyone has a great day.
