Must move farther north for before I can though. You know you only have to plant it once and it will produce for years from the original planting??
Yep, you are correct about the asparagus. Hubby was raised on a farm and one of the things they grew was asparagus. We did our best to grow it in CA but it was a joke! Ha! Hubby siad you can't get rid of it once it starts. I wish! I love asparagus. I would agree regarding the small ones except it's been this way all year! As you said though, maybe wherever the stores are getting this is from newer plants. Funny how they all seem to be newer plants though! Hmmmmm????

You are to funny Charlie!

Maybe you can get him interested in a small plot for two now. Here is a page that has some of the large stalk with purple tips kinds. I'm drooling over these and can't plant it here in the heat and humidity.

All kidding aside....those look great..just what I wanted! The soil here is clay--red clay. Probably not the best for asparagus. Things seem to grow well here but not things that need good drainage. Sigh.........

Hubby said the field would have to be about 10 years old to get to the size I am looking for! That could be the problem here!

I started with 3 year old roots and had large spears in 2 years on heavy black clay soil in N MO. In red clay I would rent a backhoe and dig a ditch and fill with a better draining soil. Maybe have it raised a little bit to so water will run off. Once we get settle back to where we can have fruit trees and garden crops again I hope to never move again. I've got a lot of fishing and such to catch up on.

Default What WAS For Dinner Tonight??

Today's supper has already happened. After running an errand, I stopped at The Black-Eyed Pea in Denton, TX. I sat down at the table to some Texas-sized chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, baked squash casserole (which I've always wanted to make myself), black-eyed peas, cornbread, and rolls. By the time I was full, I had no choice but to resist what would have been my dessert: chocolate chip bread pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And I washed everything down with some cold, sweet iced tea.

And every Wednesday is Hump Day. Enjoy it, because it's downhill from here on out to the weekend.

NMS-I forced myself and it was good. Chicken breast (took the skin off), sauerkrat salad which was surprisingly good, cantelope/watermelon. Happy to bed soon!

All the talk yesterday of chicken must've been guiding my hand, came home with skinless. boneless chicken breasts. Onion, garlic, diced prosciutto, mushrooms, red pepper flake, white wine, finished with a handful of peas and a pat of butter and put over rice. Gotta go take a few laps around the block now and walk some of it off

Default The asparagus report.

Skinny as the spears where it was still edible. Just not what I like in a big fat spear. Seems all that yellow cheese coating it got helped out with a bad situation.
