Please ask for a copy of your lab work when they do the thyroid test.

The main test is TSH. Many primary care doctors are unaware that many many endocrinologists including the American Society of Endocrinologists (or whatever they're called.. I didn't look it up today ) have changed what they consider an acceptable TSH range.

The old range allows up to 5.0 or so to be "normal" but the new range cuts off normal at 3.0 -- imagine all the people with poor thyroid function who feel sluggish and awful and know something is wrong with them but are told they are "normal" and to stop complaining cause it's all in their head!

Personally I feel best at a TSH of 1.0 or thereabouts. High TSH = hypo or low thyroid, low TSH (below .3) = hyper or too much thyroid.

We now return to our regularly scheduled food programming.

Thanks, Lacey and Elston.

I had to be my own best friend and learn all this, and I'm glad to share it with everybody because there is so much ignorance out there, even in the medical community!

I have Grave's Disease, which means (due to medical treatment) I don't have my own thyroid anymore, and I absolutely depend on that little blue pill every morning. I had a very bad experience with a very bad endocrinologist that led me to do a lot of research. Of course, he's the endocrinologist my primary care doc recommended!

If your doctor is checking your thyroid, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is the main test they use. They also sometimes check your T-3 and T-4 levels - those are two other hormones.

All I'm telling you, is look at your bloodwork and see what number is next to the line that says TSH, and hopefully it is between .3 and 3.0.
