After all the preparation with the brined and spatchcocked birds and turkey stock gravy etc, the hit of the day was the mulled apple cider in the crock pot. (Putting the mulling spices in a cheesecloth bag was a good idea. Easy to avoid slices of orange. Allspice and cloves not so much.)
Made the house smell wonderful and as the day wound down, folks started adding spiced rum or cranberry vodka to their mugs of cider.
Everything went smoothly and we had so much food. That is why I brought home enough for about meals I am guessing. My cranberry salad, combining about 3 of your wonderful recipes was a success and none left to bring home. The tiny bit that was left I gave to our oldest granddaughter who is the real cranberry lover.
Ours was a raucous afternoon with football in the family room, Legos on the dining room table, and advice to our new mother-to-be in the living room, while the babies played on the floor.
If I had to capture one Thanksgiving to look back on, this day would be it for me.

I did not make the pie crust but I made a crumb topping instead for my apple pie. Someone asked for the recipe which I will post later, it's my niece's recipe.
Now that the day has passed, what were your favorite dishes?
For me it was the salad (safe bet I always go for the veggies), and the turkey, despite being over cooked and on the dry side, the smoking and whiskey brine made it super flavorful. Our neighbor mentioned he wraps his turkey in banana leaves when smoking, and we may try that next year.

My dream Thanksgiving menu would include turkey breast w/ gravy, cranberry sauce, pan-roasted brussels sprouts with bacon and shallots, baked sweet potatoes w/ cinnamon butter, Parker House rolls, and a pear crisp. My extended family, however, has different ideas. They love mashed potatoes, stuffing, and drop biscuits (and all three must make an appearance at the table), and they hate sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts. On the bright side, we all dislike pumpkin pie, so at least there were no arguments about that.
The best dish of this year was a watercress, endive, and red pear salad with blue cheese, pecans, and tarragon vinaigrette that replaced the traditional baby greens mix because of the romaine lettuce recall. Everybody agreed it was delicious, so it will definitely be making a repeat appearance next Thanksgiving.
I guess now it's time to start planning for Christmas dinner....
