At 11.74 an hour, I make too much money for welfare. I applied for "temporary assistance" for food stamps while on chemo and was denied.

I am a bookkeeper. I could do other office jobs, but they all would be about the same pay. I don't have a college degree and don't have the time or money to go back (besides, I am 46).

You don't need a college degree to earn a high income. Plenty of high earners without a degree.

You can do a sales job where you get paid on performance. There are 6 figure earners in Sales without a degree.

$11.74 an hour for a bookkeeper in Miami? With how much experience?

The AP clerk at the company I work for in Fairfield, Iowa (pop. ~10K), who has no degree and does a horrible job, makes more than that. Our AR clerk, who does a good job (but still no degree) makes over $30K. And I know we're far from being the highest-paying company in town, and this is far from being a high-paying area.

Something doesn't add up. Either there's more to this story, or your definition of a bookkeeper and mine aren't the same.

Guess you've never seen this, huh?

Ever feel---You Gonna lose?-not-worth-coffee-beans.jpg

People who play with coffee beans get paid more than 'bean counters'.

On another note, while I was unemployed in 2004, I was offered a bookkeeper's job at $10.00. I had over 25 years experience as an accountant at the time.

I think you are a go getter and outgoing then you can make above $30K easily anywhere in Sales

I understand that bookkeepers aren't highly-paid, I was just pointing out that there are bookkeeping jobs out there that pay more than $11.74, especially in a major metro like Miami.
