I know, I am shocked at the price of vegetables.

You know gardening should be a mandatory class in school. At least it's something that can be used in life, lol. It took me 42 years to even try a garden and I love it

You're hotter than I am so you should be getting those veggies soon.

just checked and pulled some weeds. Of course we did pick one squash a couple days ago and probably will have a few more in about 10 days, I can see them forming, but they aren't even as big as my bably finger, same with a few tiny cukes starting. We have a couple tomatoes that are just beginning to get color and 2 jalapenos.

Funny what you say about your age. Our daughter just turned 50 and hubby is 5 years older. They have always talked about a garden but never have done anything toward having one. This year, they bought an upside down tomato, are getting cherry tomatoes, are growing herbs and daughter planted a couple of squash plants. Now she says if they work she will have a full garden next year. they blame their new found love on wanting to eat fresh veggies and being too cheap to buy them as they get older. (BTW, they can afford to buy all they want, and did when they didn't have the money) Go figure

Nita

The casters (wheels) on my two tomato plants work well, especially this year when the deer have been notably absent! No need to put the cage around them?

That reminded me to post my pepper spray recipe I use that somebody asked me for.

Red Pepper Spray
Grind up 1 bulb of garlic and 1 large onion. Add 1 T. cayenne pepper and a quart of water. Spray on plants to rid of sucking & chewing bugs.

(stops puppies & dogs from chewing up things too)

Great tips, Jaxson! You are just a wealth of useful information!

I picked our first cukes yesterday, and used them in salads these two days.
Tasted the first few cherry tomatoes, and the blackberries. Mmmmmm...good!
(We used the rhubarb very early in May.)

Everything is growing well, except the red pepper. It looks sad. I think it needs some sweet talk.

southward bound aw shucks just paying it forward as I once was told of these things. We have power when we can grow & preserve our own food at least that is what I was always told.

Our kohlrabi has shot up it's leaves are shadowing my bell peppers they are a little stunted. But the kohlrabi will soon be pulled & eaten then the bell peppers will get more sunshine.

Morning!

The broccoli grew so well DS wants to grow it every year. I pulled it up & yesterday planted zucchini in its place.

I left up some of the radish because the butterflies love the white flowers & I want to get more seeds for next year.

I got more bags of manure & transplanted some of my cantalope in the back of a flower garden but I am worried there is not enough sun..I don't have a sunny yard either..<fingers crossed>..

Wish my tomatoes were red..will be a bit for that..But I am going to pick all the snap peas that are left today...Don't know if there will be another harvest...not sure whether to just pull them out or give them another shot..

Jaxson, LOL~I can't remember if I planted kohlarabi or brussel sprouts but all I have is gorgeous big leaves..I'm looking for that stalk...does it come all of a sudden?? I am getting frustrated & DS wants to pull it out because they are shading other plants...
edit~just googled a pic..it must be brussel sprouts...

This is just a pic off the internet but this is what it looks like. Beautiful big leaves..Whaere are my sprouts???

Hi Gue, when do you plant broccoli? I planted in early April but the weather got hot real quick and they didn't do too well :-(

Jaxson...........the hot sauce spray for nibblers is a great inexpensive fix, but how often do you reapply? We are finally getting rain and I suspect that does wash off? I am confident that it is every bit as effective as the commercial sprays, thanks! btw, we have had such a slow spring that our rubbarb will be big enough to harvest this week.

Yes you have to reapply after it rains. I spray more on if I see more chewing on leaves. It lasts a few days though until the pests know they are not welcome. I just keep a spray bottle of it in my garden bucket that I have my trowel, gloves etc. in when I go out to the garden.

Gue yep you have brussel sprouts. Kohlarabi will have a bulb right above ground right away. Think along the lines of beets it doesn't take long to grow but we love it. I've never figured out how to save it for winter can't freeze it, never tried canning it perhaps I should see what how it does dehydrating it. But really it is best eaten peeled, sliced fresh and raw with a sprinkle of salt.
