Good grief, I don't know sometimes why I even bother.
I came home for lunch, primarily to turn on the AC so the cats wouldn't cook in the heat (long story why I should have to do this manually), and the garden looked fine.
I get home at 6 and half my plants have been eaten by the freakin' deer.
%¤¥$€!!
I saw them out in the neighbors yard yesterday and thought- how neat. A big doe and a buck with an impressive rack with the velvet still on. I even tried to take a pic at the time with my cell phone.
Most incredibly (to me at least) - I live less than 4 miles from the DC beltway
Sorry for the rant but this is something only my fellow gardeners will understand..

uggabugga vent away we've all BTDT I'm sure from some kind of animal munching our gardens.

Opyelie Tie some string or fishing line onto some aluminum pie pans from the dollar store then wrap the line around some tall wooden stakes. Tape over it to be sure it holds the wind will flick them around keeping the birds away from your berries. HTH

I canned up 10 pints of the following mock pineapple from zuke today for my DD. Check out this link for the recipe.

My one lone mater is still on the vine looked like it could use one more day before going into my belly.

LOL, I might try that - back when I was a kid and we still got milk in glass bottles with foil lids, we used to use those = )

ALL my maters are setting fruit but so far they're all green - sigh

We are lucky or thought we were; our maters are inside the 6 ft fense and there is no way the pretty little creatures can get them. They can't get the beans or peppers either, and I have been told they do not like squash or cukes. Well, we are getting almost no squash this year. We have plenty of blooms, I can see the babies and then all of a sudden the babies are gone. This morning I decided to go out really early and do a little picking, to my surprise, out of the squash patch jumped mom and 2 babies: no, not deer, little bunny rabbits. Guess next year we will put a 3 foot, cheap wire fence around the squash. I love to watch all creatures and don't want to keep them out of the yard, I just don't want them eating my dinner.

Thanks for the sympathies folks, I really didn't anticipate having a deer problem here which may have been a little naïve of me. - knew they were around b/c I sometimes would see them, or signs of them, but never had any problems til now. Today I drove 90 miles round-trip to the only Tractor Supply store in this area and bought a small fence charger, posts & wire and set it up. But there's no juice going thru, I think I need a longer ground rod. This one is only 18 inhes long but its all I had on hand.
Sigh.

Oh- and Nita? Don't believe that about deer not liking squash, they hit my yellow crooknecks hardest of all.
