u-Haul is garbage. when i've used them, they had a fleet of 1990 - 1995 Ford F-250/350's with over 250,000 miles. mine wouldn't go past 55mph. I pointed this out to them upon return, and they replied, "Oh, you're not supposed to exceed 55mph in these trucks." well thanks for telling me.
Penkse had 2005-2009 Chevys with ~20,000 miles. Higher quality truck, for about the same price. I had great service, no complaints.
We are planning to move at the end of June and our furniture and goods will be in the truck for a week. Do we need to be concerned about heat damage when moving from Kansas to Colorado?
I moved across the country (North Carolina to Montana and back again). I rented a Penske truck on the trip out, but there was no Penske rental place to get a truck from on my way back, and I had to get a U-haul ( which was old as dirt and had terrible gas mileage).
The last trucks I rented were back in 2005. The first one was a U-Haul pulling a U-Haul trailer. It made it to the destination, but was low on transmission fluid. I added some, and called U-Haul to see what they wanted me to do with it, and they said bring it back. So, back 300 miles she want. The tranny croaked just as I pulled into the lot. The case split. They actually apologized and said I must have been a sensible driver to get the truck back to the lot, lol.
The second one that I rented was a Penske. And everything that people said about the condition and newness of the Penskes was true. I had no trouble with it, but it rode like a tank, lol. The U-Haul was the much more ergonomic and comfortable to drive.
A friend of mine just rented a Penske truck to go 1300 miles. I saw it and it had less than 1000 miles on it.
It was brand new, had a very comfortable seat, rode like a limo and was great in every way.
I just got a quote from Penske to move from eastern Wyoming to San Diego. It was 1/3 the cost of U-haul. Given that and the newer, better trucks, I'm going Penske.
Another major plug for Penske and Ryder as well is that they offer diesel powered trucks which U-Haul doesn't have. If engaging on a long distance trip, diesel is far and away the better option as you will get almost 25% better MPG in most cases.
If you're renting from Penske, become a AAA member (if you're not already). The AAA discount is more than the membership costs plus you'll save on hotels.
AAA rocks!
If you have an iPhone, download the AAA TripTik app: talking GPS plus it locates gas, hotels and restaurants around you (an will call the hotels directly from the app!) and it FREE!
I say it again... AAA rocks!
Don't go with Budget Truck Rentals. All the local agents want to do is tell you how bad Budget is and they don't make any money. I rent trucks often and you can never count on the truck being at the agent's site when you go to get it.
