It'll be easier for you to find rides in some areas than others, like the CO mountains if you come through.
It's very common for backcountry skiers and snowboarders to hitch rides to the top of mountain passes such as those along US 40 and US 6 over and over again. I'm not sure about summer, though. Off of the main roads, I'd imagine it's common to give and receive hitched rides to other trailheads and whatnot in the area.
But near some farms in the middle of Kansas, I'm not so sure you'd have such an easy time getting further down the road.
Good luck though! It sounds like a mighty adventure!
A lot of the whitewater rivers in Colorado are along highways.
At the bottom of the run we hitchhike back to our trucks.
Never have a problem getting a ride.
An girlfriend and I were sking Loveland Pass one year in late June and were picked up by a couple of school teachers from Illinois in Colorado for vacation. They claimed they had never picked up a hitchhiker in 40 years.
But they were curious about a couple on the side of the road in shorts and ski boots!

YMMV
I hope I have luck when I go. From Cleveland to the Rockies. Sounds like its gonna be hell.
Pretty cool documentary on this called "Thumbs Up America". He hitches from east to west coast, and from Mexico to Canada. In another season, I can't remember exactly where, but he hitched across an Asian country. Definitely worth the watch, I enjoyed it.
The world (IMO) is not as scary as a lot make it out to be. Most people are just afraid of anything that is not immediately familiar.
It is not nearly as easy as it used to be, but if you are patient and careful, and have plenty of time, it still works.
It takes a lot of thought, these days.
I have a lot of useful advice, but it's bed-time, my wife says, so I will have to pick this up later.
If you want it, that is.
PLEASE DO!!! You seem very informative. I could use a lot of advice. I leave this Friday. I'll be looking forward to all your useful advice.
Thanks in advance.
