I didn't mean to say that Austin couldn't support a professional team, but football would probably be a hard sell. NBA or NHL would probably be the best for Austin.
4th NBA team in Texas with one being 80 miles apart and that one now basically one of the great franchises in NBA history? I doubt it. MLS and NHL could work. I don't see the NBA and especially NFL. UT will see to that. While Austin is not a college town like Athens or Chapel Hill, UT sports still own that market and that market is not that big.

The other thing is that Sacramento has a team but its size is roughly the same as a San Antonio or Austin as it is, the team 80 miles from Sacramento would be the Golden State Warriors. They are there because they are in a massive San Francisco Bay Area market, which is the 5th or 6th largest media market in the country after New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas/Fort Worth and/or Philadelphia.

I meant 2 in SoCal...sorry. But the 2 in NoCal are more similar to Austin/San Antonio. Texas is large enough for 4 teams much as California is.
I do think that Austin could support an NBA team. It has the local population necessary and they would undoubtedly give massive support to their first professional sports team.

I don't know, as UT Men's and Women's Basketball seems to be pretty big in Austin. It work in terms of getting an NBA team, but there would be some competition.
An out of the box suggestion would be a MLS team in Rochester NY, as they already have a Soccer specific stadium that could expand, when ready. They support the current team that plays there and would have nearby metros that could offer more fan support.

No UT Men's and Women's basketball isn't that big though the potential is there for it to be bigger. What hurts Austin is the proximity to three other large markets and it's barely even a top 50 market. What hurts Austin for NFL is simply UT football.

The major difference is that all the markets in California that has an NBA team are in the top 20. Austin is number 49.
