No, not at all. I had looked at the Kalamazoo area, but I'm not too sure after what I've read. I have never really heard many good things about crime rates in Michigan in general, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway
Yes, like snort said that's a diverse and interesting choice of states.
With that fixed and relatively low budget i'd forget California as the places that i'd recommend would not be suitable for your budget restrictions.
Since Oregon is on your list, have you considered Bend.
Although i do hear good things about Chico, CA and i think that it's relatively inexpensive.

There is a state U there but as Snort said, you will have to establish your residency wherever you go.
Check out Craigslist. You can get a sense of what the cost of living (re; rent) anywhere in the country.

Yes, after marking off which states I did NOT want to move to on the map, I quickly noticed how spread out they are. That in mind, I realized that finding a new place would be a bit more difficult than I expected. I have written Bend down, and I'll take a look at Chico. Thank you for the info

I found a place on apartments.com and it was a 1250 sqft 2/2 apt for under $600... I was thinking that either its in a high crime area, or its an older apartment. Do you know what areas would be best to stay away from? How's the crime in Kalamazoo in general?

If you could give a population size, climate preference, location near mountains, lakes, rivers, ocean (OK, for your price range, you might have to due without a view of the Pacific) we can help you more. Your choices will probably rely more on college programs though. You might find narrowing choices more easily when based on college choice.

I'm not worried about mountains, lakes, rivers, etc, just a safer place to live. The college program, as I said, is computer networking, network administration to be specific. Thank you so much for you help
Interesting choices of states. I've traveled around this country plenty and would personally never consider living in Kentucky :P
Out of your choices, I'd go with either Colorado or California. Both are beautiful places. Economically, Colorado is actually doing very well. California, not so much.
But from everything I've seen, after NYC, California is the more interesting place to live. It's very diverse, with MANY things to do and see.
I like NorCal a bit more than SoCal just cause the people tend to be genuinely nicer, and more laid back & chill.
Unfortunately, you wont find a 900 sq foot, 2BR place for $700 a month. However if you're willing to rent a 1BR apartment, there are quite a few in Sacramento and the surrounding area(s) for $700/month. Plus, if you live in Sac you'll be in close proximity to Tahoe and San Fransisco.
Good choice on your major btw! I know a couple of people who do computer networking for their companies and they pull in some nice pay.
