Any similar cities like San Diego on the east coast? (gated, living)

I am in Long Island in NY. Its a nice place to live, but mostly for rich families. The career opportunities are far and few, it has been bleeding jobs due to the financial industry and housing market fall out. Cost of living is extremely expensive as is property taxes. Actually, you get hit up hard for just about anything: food, gas, sales tax, income tax, etc. you cannot catch a break; your bank account gets drained easily. Its similar to DC's costs/lifestyle but Long Island is much more expensive in all categories. The commuting is killer here, especially if you live 20+ miles from NYC. Also, the rail service will cost you $20-25 round trip for the day. Traffic getting in towards NYC and in NJ is horrible! DC Beltway pails in comparison to the traffic you encounter in and around the tri-state area. The weather is a mixed bag, winters are colder with some snow and summers are cooler than in DC.
On the positive note, LI has great beaches nearby, the Hampton's and wineries, but that's pretty much all it has going for it. It's basically become old rich persons enclave in most areas, very little diversity when it comes to dining, arts, nightlife, etc. NYC is where you go for that.
Bottom line: I have been seeking to move somewhere else for some time, but my job has kept me here. I have seriously been considering DC but I am not sure about it. I found it hard to gauge the people, costs and lifestyle, it seems far from the beach and the housing costs are $. I like Phila and Boston, much more affordable than NYC area. But San Diego caught me good on my recent visit!

I see. From what you're telling I don't think you will like DC either. If you really like SD, but you can't find a job there, then you should consider the OC/LA suburbs. More career ops in that area than SD.
If you are talking about a similar vibe, or perhaps a city that is more relaxed than its neighbors...(as San Diego is to L.A.) there may be a few candidates.
the DC metro. Plus it's near water. Providence, RI isn't all that far from NYC or Boston, but has a different vibe. .

East Bay is correct that the closest to the SD vibe is Hawaii.

Tidewater maybe, full of Navy and other military. On the ocean with lots of beach access. The difference being people can swim in the east coast beaches because the water is warm unlike SD.
Other than that the comparison ends. SD is just like much of SoCal culturally which is not very appealing.

That's probably the best comparison I can think of.. Not many places with beaches, military, and urban areas all in one.

VA Beach is the only one of the Tidewater Cities where that stupid Cali type materialistic TV induced cliquish persona is common. Other than that the people in Tidewater are pretty humle and down to earth, unlike many of the non - Hispanics in SoCal
What is the culture like in San Diego & environs? Tidewater- VA Beach good mention, I have to look into it.
Mostly Mexican culture and SoCal media pops culture of superficiality and materialism.
