but the militia outweighed the Continental army in numbers by quite a bit, they would usually throw the militia to start the attack and use the Continentals to finish things off

If you want serious, well researched answers to your questions, I suggest you read Boston's Gun Bible and Molon Labe. Among other important topics, both books exhaustively cover the topic of how ordinary citizens could use rifles--and in fact have used them--to successfully oppose tyranny. They're two of the best books I've ever read.
