Most Jamaicans are black, so why would he not identify as black? Or, does he have one white parent and one black? The only “culture” my son identifies with is American.
The Hispanic category was invented by Richard Nixon and the GOP as way to attack/counter African American political and social aspirations.
American demographic categories do not have a common denominator. Of all the categories, Hispanic is probably the worst one from a logical standpoint as a Hispanic could be White, Black,Amerindian,Far Eastern Asian or a mix of these.
I think we should simply ask people to write what they want to be classified as, instead of having these apples vs. oranges vs. pears vs. pineapples categories.
The questions on the census are clearly about race/genetics. They have nothing to do with culture or what one identifies themselves as. That is until they decided to use Hispanic as a race when clearly it isn't. Evidently our government doesn't know the difference or they don't want to because it wouldn't fit with their agenda.
People should answer the race question only based on their race/genetics nothing more. Since Mestizo or Mullato are not catagories on the census then in all honesty they should choose other or mixed race if that is what they are. It bothers me when people only want to claim part of what they are racially. Are they ashamed? In denial?
Since Hispanic is a culture and not a race I don't know what it is doing in the race catagory anyway on the census. They should have instead Mestizo or Mullato on it which both are mixed races.

The problem arises from the fact that although Hispanic is clearly not a race, it is treated as such in this country; ergo, the “racism” component in illegal immigration. How can people from various racial categories be classified as a “minority” for no other reason than the predominant language spoken?
Most U.S. citizens speak English, and we are considered “Americans” because we are citizens of the USA. Yet, no one in this world would think of considering American as a race. Likewise, Hispanic as a race is utter nonsense.

Funny that you brought that up: most North American Hispanics by virtue of their American Indian heritage, are Asian genetically speaking.
Carry that to its conclusion, Most white Americans are of Asian descent, by virtue of their descent from west migrating Asian tribes, Goths, Visigoths, Franks, Germans, Slavs.
The Irish and South Italians and Basques are about it for European heritage.
