Some more info for Broadrippledude.

As of 8/11 Illinois has lost 6.43% from its high of non-farm payroll jobs in the last decade.

Indiana has lost 7.12% over the same time.
Seriously, though, isn't a bit hypocritical to celebrate problems in neighboring Indiana? Lead by example...

Default Data set

I put the data set together based on previous comments that XYZ state is, was, has, "______________________" (fill in the blank) better than "__________" (fill in the blank) in Illinois.

If you look at the data you'll see we are all in the same leaky boat in one aspect or another. Yet, and despite the economy, Illinois does have:
1. A sustainable wine industry
2. One out of every ten employed in the state is in the industry that brings $30.7B tourism dollars annually. Navy Pier, for instance, has 8M visisors.
3. Approximately 32,000 oil and gas production wells. There is oil production in 40 of the 102 counties in Illinois; most are located in the southern part of the state. The first attempt at drilling oil wells occurred near Champaign, Illinois in 1853.
4. A sustainable service industry. Hundredes of restaurants, taverns, hotels, and thousands of acres maintained in parks across the state
5. A sustainable medical system. Does have a more than just an adequate number of hospitals and clinics in the state. (There are twenty or more between Peoria, B-N and Springfield that serve approximately 800,000 residents and 31,000 college students.) This system also includes a non-traditional hoilistic community.
6. A sustainable system for contiuing education.
7. Sustainable small business communitites state wide.

The myopia and lack of regional vision and cooperation in the Midwest is nothing short of disheartening. Our region is struggling in a national economy dominated by the coasts. China, India, Brazil, and others are eating our lunch. Yet our political leaders resort to smokestack chasing across state lines within the region instead of working toward growing economies and creating real new jobs. I don't buy for a second that Mitch Daniels is any sort of miracle worker. Indiana's current fiscal state seems to be the result of gimmicks like the Toll Road lease and smoke and mirrors such as swapping one tax for another instead of actual economic growth.

Yes, Indiana is comparatively better off than Illinois by some measures right now, but given the strong business links between the two states, Hoosiers should ask themselves if a hobbled Illinois is truly good for their state. The current conditions of Michigan and Ohio aren't good for Indiana. Why would anyone in Indiana want to have yet another state in such a seemingly hopeless condition on its doorstep?
