Outside of those factors, no.

I don't know the specifics with Indiana, but I would assume they're going to gain a ton of Illinois jobs in the coming decades, since Illinois will have no choice but to raise income and corporate taxes to pay its incredible debt service and pension obligations (easily worst in the nation on both counts).
OK, but as others have noted, Illinois still has the talent base that many corporations desire. And if that talent base doesn't want to relocate to Indiana, what do those employers do?

Exactly.
You only have FOUR COUNTIES in Indiana that have 25% or more of the population with a four year degree with poverty rates of less than 10%. Those are: Hamilton, Boone, Hendricks, and Bartholomew.

It is very easy to take a simple fact and spin it in to something ugly. Newspapers are wont to do this for advertising dollars. If it bleeds it leads wether it is red ink or blood.

IL Legislators have been asleep at the switch for far too long. Governors who wish to live in Chicago need to support their to and fro travel habit out of their own pocket. We the people are tired of paying for RodBlog style road trips. We should turn the Gov. mansion into a money making entity and let Gov sleep in a hotel when he decides to come to work - which doesn't seem to be too often these days.

Go Green: Recycle congress and our state legislators.

Default Me too!

There is a danger in acting rashly when the economy is not in balance. We don't know all the facts. We don't know the total state income or its source(s); we don't know the true cost of running the state. and we don't have a hand on the Gov's residence and road trips. It is ridiculous for We The People to support two residences and the travel time between them plus State Police for one governor.

How many state offices can be closed? Is it cheaper to pay Link Card unemployment and Medicaid than a salary? I think it depends upon the salary.

We could raise one-cent per dollar on groceries only, then take the money and apply it to past bills due to home care, hospitals and nursing homes. I would like to know how much money is generated monthly from our one penny. Those who do not own a house do not contribute money to the taxing body of each county. The retired and poor don't pay state income tax either. This is why some states seperately tax everything on wheels plus farm machinery. It is a seperate bill included with the real estate tax bill. Some poor states go so far as to tax TVs and washer/dryer in the home.

Illinois, our great state... governors getting $80 haircuts... flying from chicago to Springfield daily... we should change or state motto! I vote for " glorious Illinois, where our Governors make our license plates. But hey, at least its not Indiana!"
Anyone second that?

Indiana has some good aspects to the place , just like every place in the USA.

The people who I know from there do not share this negative outlook on Illinois.

What wears my keyboard down is the constant chant of Corruption in Illinois, High Taxes etc...

Yes the state got caught in the fiscal meltdown and we do need pension reform among a few other areas.
Give me a state that is picture perfect , it simply does not exist.

There are too many dynamics at play for that to happen.

I can see some light shining thru the cracks that some of our politicians are stating to notice fundamental change is needed.

This is welcome news IMHO Illinois is very competitive in the business arena
and when we get our fiscal home in order and have a few adjustments this state will once again stop being the whipping boy.

All in all the state is really not that high in taxes for crying out loud how many years was our state at 3%? Now its 5%. This is still far below most states.
The media sniffed this out and played on it for months on end.

The corporate tax deal I think the Crains article has summed that up well.
The overall effective tax rate for a business in Illinois is more competitive than all of our neighbors.

To me it also appears our layering of government is a huge waste in reg.
townships, counties ,villages, towns, cities , states.
You could probably trim a lot of fat by eliminating this layering.

Our system of government was framed during the late 1700's and 1800's and is not designed for a ] society at the year 2011. This is in reference to the township level and the village, town or city and county layers.

Amen. Legislators here in Indiana need to get that message as well.
