This definitely sounds like the sentiment of one who can't stand that large city politics are very different from your small town politics. Gonna go out on a leg and say they think democrats have ruined Chicago. I say, show me a major American city that isn't run by Democrats? Chicago has its problems, but they are problems a lot of cities experience.

Guess you have no sewage bill? But a Septic system.....

Nice you have solar... very liberal minded. I would have liked it for my home.... could have on a roof. Just never did once I got a new roof. Giving dares our serves no purpose if you are truly happy where you are and stage of life you are in. Like the song says..... Don't Worry.... be Happy. Of course life throws us curve balls..... but in retirement or early one especially. Let go of baggage of a former location. I keep saying this as it is commonsense. Success is also in ones mind and not all about $$$ to boast.

My water bill is dirt cheep too and not even a well. Just city water from mountain reservoirs. My Sewer bill is double my water bill and some. They had to double its size of the sewage treatment plant a few years ago and .... .someone has to pay. I also had a Apartment years ago in the upstairs of my home..... I have it long empty. Still the Sewer Co. requires 1/2 a bill for that empty apt unless I took toilets out etc. I never bothered so I pay it. Only complaint in utilities.

My taxes are cheaper then yours.... I do not have a large lot ..... as it is in the small city and I love the ability to walk most places in either direction. Bars, clubs, restaurants and grocery store. Hated commutes up and over mountains and 2 lane roads where a tractor trailer could slow you down. Too many years of it.

Now No more commuting for me........ I have no need for the boonies. I have no need for a bunker home cause of my Politics and hating everything of the Government and of course...Dems and half of the people in this Nation. I accept some I like are both Liberal and Conservative.

I am more then happy to mix with others in bars.... and more Conservative locals in the few volunteer firehouse bar clubs.... I belong to 3 of them.... plus even though not Italian. A Sons of Italy Club bar... today does not matter if Catholic and Italian as back-in-the-day. One other not a firehouse.... but still a club you need a membership in. Then I have the option of regular bars to craft brewing ones where mixing occurs of all types.... like them all ...... as You learn how everyone has issues, but still like them and get to know them .... they know your name and you theirs. Understanding how good people can get in trouble in a time in life and it is a problem for life for some. Hate stories of couple favorite bartenders being young getting some trouble and it effects their lives for sure.... just half ones income going for Child support of a child. Might be righteous and forced to do by the court. It makes one very limited in a ability to move, gain wealth and invest $$$. Some former New Yorker's whose lives did not gain wealth.... but yes a cheaper area to live works today. Some retired, some disabled, some seem to not hold jobs long...... clearly a melting pot of circumstances people have in life that effect them.

Me..... I endured, worked, skipped vacations, still did not get rich. Still could retire early No complaints. Only wish investing came sooner in life, but did not have a spouse who was a saver..... That restricted my gaining more wealth.... satisfied though yes. Always owned my home already when young.... moved to a larger house and back in my first home......

I want my SS there perhaps starting next year as I start collecting. I am sure many in IL as me. My home will be my last as I have no intention of moving unless it is a Senior high-rise center we may choose in the future. Small yard and front is plenty for my needs. Some good neighbors.... some OK and a couple.... well.....

I fear no body and need no gun. I respect those who do.... especially those ex-military who having 1 or 20 is endearing to them. Just heard of one murder in a nearby sister city the other day. None in mine..... but had 3 last year. I believe all 3 were transplants from a large city. Still no fear. I walk up town and I am fine. Come home late sometimes no problem.... just not huge on any nightlife.

I do not need the sunbelt or wild wild west or bunker remote home. I respect those that do and always say.... I let go of my baggage or regrets...... All should eventually.
Daring someone to somehow prove they live as cheaply as you serves little purpose except maybe for the person daring. WE CANNOT TAKE IT WITH US.... So does not matter what one owns if more unhappy and things eat at one from the past you cannot let go of..... It is time to let go perhaps..... great time to come to....

My area of PA is not like Chicagoland or your area in Nevada. How rural it is does not matter except I am fine in a small city at this stage and need not segregate myself from people a bit different. I actually like most as you get to know them being out and about mixing with them.....

Still I hope your water issues stay in check out there. Does not sound good for this summer? But at least your power is free. We need to realize.... EACH place in the Country is its own Microcosm of a region with its negatives and pluses. ONE CAN LIVE A HAPPY LIVES IN EACH and should realize that.... there is more to life then money and fearing others and having a negative outlook on half of this Great Nation cause some disagree with us and we toward them.... sure valid reasons. When it EATS At one..... that is a personal kind of hell if it is severe.

As I matured and come to terms with everything. I am much much happier. I will always have a special place for Chicagoland and Chicago in particular. I am sure I would have stayed if my Father did not have his major accident in that era.... and returned to PA. That was merely a set of life's circumstances. I never claim my area is a UTOPIA. That would make little sense and I am not a boaster cause I can live cheap here.

I am far from larger metros though not merely on a farm or remote mountain place. I have plenty of people around me. Small city life is great for many.

Always.... as events change in this US of A that never stays the same. IL could one day boom for all we know. Be in a better climate region in a couple decades? One never knows as I already lived though so many changing decades, eras and styles that nothing surprises me.

Some things that really got my by surprise .... is how far we divided in a few years and Politically to see neighbors as enemies and any other culture as un-American. The God terrible divides this Nation has gotten into last few years and Conspiracy Theories that were merely a few believed in the past.... so many now can fall prey to them if they feel the fear it delivers to them and need to blame others festers. Mixing Bible end-time prophecy even with these current new Conspiracies seeing our own Government and the World even as a enemy the Deep State and someone as a Putin as a respected leader.

I hope to live my years without major upheaval and can still get my SS before that changes..... and feeling no need for a gun...... wife now wants the doors locked cause of a neighbor we hear is dealing and well...... guess it is time.

You left out the part about the costs of getting solar and how many years to recoup investment.

What's your average electric bill in the summer out of curiosity?

well, I have a single story, 2100 sf house, front door faces the west, and we are in a valley between some mountains..not sure if that matters
We have no pool either.

Anyways, I am super hi efficient, all LED lights, solar power lights, and such, we are a very energy mindful house hold

my "bill" would be 120-300 per month, depending on time of year.

but, its not unusual, depending on house size and stuff you have, to have a 300-800+ dollar electric bill in some houses out here

No, it doesn't quit when you are deceased. Illinois one of a handful of states with a rather significant estate tax.

A Day old new listing.... nice Tutor Home.... was a longer time older since 1990. Taxes fairly steady with no big spikes and LOW for Chicago today. Nicely updated... .maybe a flip? Looks like the original Platinum Kitchen Cabinets? Still very nice. Basic white and not sure if original wood floors refinished?
Northwest Side... I knew the area when I lived in Chicago.

Built in 1942 and sold last week for ---> $360,000 ---> Last sold in 1990 for $125,000.

https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/32.../home/13467139

Taxes low for Chicago..... would never be this price if a gentrified area.
Still would be surprised if taxes remained similar for the new sale price and owners.....
STILL WACKY DROP in Taxes ups and downs yearly... you see in listings sometimes.

This was literally the first one I clicked on I thought it was a single home but it is multi-residential today. Huge jump in taxes in 2013.
Gentrifying - Humboldt Park on a double-lot and rebuilt in 2014. BASICALLY A 3-UNIT MULTI-RESIDENTIAL HOME......
Does not look as big as it is to me... why it looked like a single cottage home to me.

I only am going by what Refin list for this only 5 hours old new listing.
Does not show really last sale price.

The sale price of comparable properties is what affects the property tax assessment, or in the case of a recently (up to 2 years ago) bought home, its sale price.

Property tax rate in IL is 2.27% (plus anything else your local municipality tacks on). If you bought your home for $350k, expect you'll be paying around $8k in property taxes upon next reassessment.
